Content Optimization focuses on enhancing existing content to improve search engine rankings and user engagement, while Content Writers create new content to attract and inform audiences. Both roles often work within marketing teams and require strong writing skills, but their core tasks differ significantly.

What is content optimization?

Content optimization is the process of improving your website's content to make it more appealing and useful to both users and search engines. This involves refining text, images, metadata, and other elements to boost search engine rankings, increase user engagement, and achieve specific business goals. Techniques include keyword integration, improving readability, adding relevant links, and ensuring content is up to date. Effective content optimization helps drive more organic traffic and enhances the overall user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in content optimization, and why are they important?

To thrive in Content Optimization, you need expertise in SEO, keyword research, analytics, and a solid understanding of digital marketing principles, often supported by a degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, and various content management systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication help professionals stand out in this role. These skills ensure content reaches the right audience, performs well in search rankings, and aligns with business goals.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in content optimization roles, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in content optimization is balancing SEO requirements with maintaining engaging and natural-sounding content for readers. Professionals often need to collaborate closely with writers, editors, and SEO specialists to ensure content is both discoverable and valuable. Keeping up with frequent changes in search engine algorithms and best practices is also crucial. Addressing these challenges involves ongoing communication with team members, continuous learning, and using analytics tools to measure and refine optimization strategies.

Job description

OVERVIEW OF THE COMPANY
Fox TV Stations
FOX Television Stations owns and operates 29 full power broadcast television stations in the U.S. These include stations located in 14 of the top 15 largest designated market areas, or DMAs, and duopolies in 11 DMAs, including the three largest DMAs (New York, Los Angeles and Chicago). Of these stations, 18 are affiliated with the FOX Network. In addition to distributing sports, entertainment and syndicated content, our television stations collectively produce approximately 1,200 hours of local news every week. These stations leverage viewer, distributor and advertiser demand for the FOX Network's national content.
JOB DESCRIPTION
THE BRIEF
  • We're hiring a Digital Content Manager to help lead our Group Content Team (GCT), serving all 17 FTS markets across the country.
  • In this role, you will coordinate with the GCT and local newsrooms to publish stories, videos, and social content on all kinds of topics to engage local users.
  • This is an in-newsroom position based at one of the LiveNOW from FOX locations in Orlando or Phoenix and includes weekend shifts.

BIG PICTURE VIEW
Reporting to the Senior Manager of the Group Content Team, the Digital Content Manager will split time between three main duties: Planning coverage, coordinating between 17 stations and LiveNOW from FOX, and hands-on digital & social content production.
DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?
You're a journalist who's smart, driven, quick-thinking, resourceful, full of energy and has a deep passion for what you do. You've got goals. You're competitive and want to win. All the time. Your journalistic standards are high, and so is the bar you set for your team. You're obsessed with quality and serving the audience in the best possible way. You pivot quickly and keep your cool when things get tough. You can coordinate with different contributors across multiple time zones while sharing your knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm with teams of different skills and backgrounds.
A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Help manage the team that creates news and event-based content for users in all markets, including text stories, photos/graphics, connected TV/live streaming content, breaking news, mobile alerts, and social media elements.
  • Prioritize resources to cover a mix of important national, international, breaking, and viral stories, including original ideas.
  • Help guide editorial decisions and collaborate with the Senior Digital Content Manager to execute team strategy in line with group needs.
  • Ensure content exceeds group quality standards.
  • Collaborate with digital leaders and other internal FOX partners across our 17 local newsrooms to anticipate the needs of our stations and their unique audiences.
  • Monitor real-time analytics to make data-driven decisions.
  • Contribute to planning for weekend coverage and big events.
  • Other duties as deemed necessary and assigned.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
  • 5+ years' experience developing and publishing unique content, including news, for digital and social platforms.
  • BA/BS degree is a plus, preferably in journalism, communications, or related field with emphasis on digital publishing.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and evolve compelling news content on digital platforms, including during breaking news situations.
  • Superior news judgment with impeccable writing, copy-editing, and SEO skills.
  • Outstanding attention to detail with a relentless passion and drive to win.
  • Proficiency in content management systems, video publishing, live streaming, content discovery, and digital analytics tools.
  • Video and photo editing experience (Adobe products a plus).
