Job description

Compliance Consultant - Food Safety (Contract)
Job Description
This contract role offers an opportunity for an experienced food safety professional to act as the primary subject matter expert for food safety regulations within an editorial team. You will ensure that training materials and compliance resources are accurate, current, and aligned with FDA, USDA, FSMA, and HACCP requirements, while helping to translate complex regulations into clear, practical content for industry use.
Responsibilities
  • Review food safety training and compliance materials to verify accuracy and alignment with FDA, USDA, FSMA, and HACCP requirements.
  • Evaluate existing content for regulatory compliance and real-world applicability within food processing and food safety operations.
  • Edit and redline Word-based content drafts, using correct food safety terminology and regulatory language.
  • Provide expert subject matter input on food processing operations, hazard controls, and compliance expectations.
  • Identify gaps in outlines and training modules, highlighting missing topics or areas that require clarification or further detail.
  • Support the development and enhancement of training materials by collaborating with internal compliance experts and editorial staff.
  • Research relevant food safety regulations and guidance documents and translate them into accessible, actionable written content.
  • Work closely with editorial leadership and other subject matter experts to ensure consistency, quality, and clarity across all materials.
  • Perform detailed contract and content review with a strong focus on regulatory compliance and accuracy.
  • Maintain meticulous records and data entry related to content revisions and regulatory references.

Essential Skills
  • Extensive industry experience in food processing, food safety management, or environmental health and safety roles, such as Food Safety Manager, Safety Manager, or Director.
  • Strong working knowledge of FDA, USDA, FSMA, and HACCP regulations and how they apply in operational settings.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements to training and compliance materials.
  • Technical writing and editing skills, with the ability to review and refine written content for accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
  • High level of attention to detail when reviewing regulatory content, contracts, and training materials.
  • Proficiency with PC and MS Office Suite, particularly Word for redlining and content editing.
  • Demonstrated experience in regulatory compliance and food safety terminology.
  • Strong organisational skills to manage multiple content reviews and deadlines within a part-time schedule.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience collaborating with editorial teams or compliance content developers.
  • Background in developing or delivering food safety training programmes.
  • Familiarity with broader regulatory compliance practices beyond food safety.
  • Ability to communicate complex regulatory concepts in a clear and practical way for non-experts.
  • Experience with data entry and documentation related to regulatory or compliance activities.
  • Comfort working independently in a remote, contract-based environment.

Why Work Here?
You will join a team dedicated to improving safety and compliance standards through high-quality educational content. The role offers flexible part-time hours, allowing you to balance professional commitments with other priorities. You will work fully remotely, using your expertise to influence industry-wide training resources while collaborating with experienced compliance and editorial professionals. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on food safety practices without the constraints of a traditional on-site role.
Work Environment
This is a fully remote contract position, allowing you to work from your preferred location using your own PC and MS Office Suite, particularly Word, for content review and redlining. You will typically work 10-20 hours per week on a flexible schedule over a period of approximately 3-4 months. Collaboration with editorial leadership and other subject matter experts will take place via digital communication tools, enabling focused, independent work alongside regular virtual touchpoints. As this is a remote role, there is no fixed dress code beyond what is appropriate for occasional video meetings.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Neenah, WI.
