Job description

The Superintendent is responsible for directing and coordinating the operations of discharge, load and departure of assigned transportation guaranteeing quality, security, safety, and efficiency in accordance with relevant operational and technical parameters. This position serves as first line supervisor of the operations management team and is responsible for the direction and supervision of union labor workers, which will include the hiring and firing of labor. The Superintendent is often the only member of management interacting with labor while working a ship and must represent the interests of SSA while supervising union labor.

  • Supervises all personnel, including company labor and contract labor, in proper operating procedures, and will work with local management to counsel, discipline and/or make hiring and termination decisions to ensure an efficient operation.
  • Manages the availability of equipment and personnel required for timely completion of scheduled terminal operations, and that staff and equipment are fully utilized, optimize resources utilization and uptime to meet the economic performance indicators, and assist as necessary with other required tasks in order to turn the vessel around within specific time.
  • Work closely with terminal staff to prepare department plans while determining the appropriate workforce to hire for an efficient and cost-effective completion of plan.
  • Supports, monitors and trouble shoots, when necessary, terminal operating systems, ensuring data is accurate. Additional technology related duties may apply.
  • Enforces productivity levels by supervising workers in making multiple rounds within the terminal operation and a follow up assessment prior to shift end.
  • Completes various reports and forms such as shift production, payroll, and safety summaries; Produces reports to respective parties within required deadlines.
  • Complete damage reports accurately and report & review any incidents and/or issues to the appropriate Manager of the operation to understand risk analysis and liability.
  • Is responsible for reviewing all documents associated with operations and make sure all equipment and gear is ready prior to starting operations.
  • The Superintendent will maintain a positive working relationship with the labor; the Superintendent is to set the standard and be held accountable for a safe and efficient operation.
  • Plans, holds, and documents daily safety meetings; partnering with Area Health, Safety & Environment to understand and train longshore workers to adhere to safety procedures while implementing plans to address safety hazards.
  • Ensure that all required personnel are wearing Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), such as safety vest, safety toe boots, safety glasses and protective hard hat, when applicable.
  • Responsible for investigation and reporting damages and liabilities to the appropriate management and authorities.
  • Responsible for compliance under HAZMAT and OSHA Regulations. Including reporting any incidents to the Supervisor immediately.
  • Responsible for learning, navigating, and adhering to all union contracts.
  • Oversees and ensures that all policies and procedures are being managed efficiently and effectively.
  • Visually inspects areas for hazards and brings all inquiries to management.
  • May be required to verify all cargo is loaded/discharged efficiently and within regulations.
  • Serves as a key coordinator between all parties, vessels, customers, agents and labor.
  • Ensures that all employees follow the company policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Manual and/or Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Other duties as required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent experience working in management.
  • 3 years managing related union labor.
  • Valid Driver's License and CPR certificate required.
  • Must have valid DL and be able to maintain a TWIC card.
  • Thorough knowledge or principles of terminal operations
  • Proven leadership skills.
  • Experience with computerized operating systems.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules.
  • Required to observe all safety and health requirements for container terminal environment

Work environment:

  • Must be able to work in rotating shifts, days, evenings, and nights at multiple terminals
  • Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures of hot and cold, extremely dusty conditions, and occasionally, conditions of high levels of noise.
  • The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast-moving equipment.
  • The ability to drive 10%.
