Position Description
ENTRY SALARY: $62,120.69

Under limited direction, the Solid Waste Supervisor II oversees, supervises, manages, and monitors the solid waste operations and assists in the administration of the department. Manages personnel to ensure efficient, effective, and professional solid waste operations.
This current recruitment is for the Container Maintenance section of the Solid Waste Department.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Oversees, supervises, and manages all refuse and recycling operations for the City; manages, delegates, and assigns tasks for various employees; trains, mentors, and provides professional development for solid waste employees performing field work, fabrication and welding work, and transfer station operations.
  • Provides high level direction and guidance for issues and concerns that may arise on a daily basis; confers and communicates with upper management to address department issues and make adjustments to policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes and evaluates general operations, collection routes, pick-up locations, types of services, and other activities to ensure maximum efficiency; establishes and implements new procedures; prepares consistent reports on department and personnel activities.

  • Performs annual evaluations for drivers and solid waste workers; provides feedback and direction, mentors, and facilitates teamwork and success; trains and monitors safety procedures and ensures all equipment is used.
  • Supervises, oversees, and manages the work of welding and fabrication activities; oversees special projects and custom fabrication needs, performs skilled trades work when needed, and ensures all repairs and maintenance are completed accurately and efficiently.
  • Organizes inventory, commercial and residential recycling containers, commercial and residential trash bins, compactors, and roll-off open tops; orders and purchase needed containers and troubleshoots repairs to compactors and power units.
  • Coordinates general fleet maintenance and repair activities; purchases new and improved equipment and monitors care of current fleet; oversees container maintenance, repair, or replacement and ensure customer concerns are met.
  • Responds and resolves customer inquiries and complaints; meets and engages with customers, contractors, and other business owners regarding solid waste requirements; investigates incidents, accidents, and injuries.
  • Inspects illegal dumping and other solid waste service cases.
  • Monitors violations, tracks, and ensures corrections have been made within the proper timeframe, completes re-inspections, makes follow up calls and engages with owners to ensure corrections have been made, filing appropriate documents for data.

  • Assists in budget development and implementation; tracks expenses and ensures proper resource allocation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver's license is required.
SWANA Certification preferred or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire

Type: Possession and maintenance of Class B with Air breaks except for Transfer Station.
This position is required to operate the below equipment, machines, tools, and other work aides:
Office equipment, computer, telephone, radio, wide variety of collection of vehicles, and other equipment as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma, High School Equivalency or G.E.D. Certificate AND five (5) years of experience in an integrated municipal solid waste operation and some management experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
