While much of the media industry is still searching for a sustainable business model, we're proving that exceptional journalism and a thriving consumer business can grow together.

Now we're investing in what's next: accelerating consumer revenue growth, launching new products and membership experiences, building world‑class marketing and analytics capabilities, and creating the next generation of independent media. That’s where you come in.

About the Role

The Bulwark is seeking a Director of Consumer Growth & Revenue to lead the next phase of growth across our portfolio.

Reporting to the Head of Growth & Marketing, this leader will own The Bulwark's consumer growth strategy, driving subscriber growth, consumer revenue, and long‑term business performance across our portfolio.

This role sits at the intersection of marketing, analytics, product, editorial, and revenue. You'll develop the strategies, experimentation frameworks, and commercial initiatives that accelerate subscriber acquisition, improve retention, optimize pricing and packaging, and unlock new revenue opportunities. You'll partner closely with Audience Operations, Editorial, Creative, and Executive Leadership to bring those strategies to life.

This role is ideal for a builder who wants to help scale a profitable, independent media company with a highly engaged community and significant room for growth.

What You'll Do

Own Consumer Revenue Strategy

  • Own The Bulwark's consumer growth strategy across subscriptions, memberships, newsletters, podcasts, events, and future consumer products.
  • Develop annual growth plans, revenue forecasts, and measurable business goals.
  • Lead experimentation across acquisition, retention, pricing, packaging, promotional strategy, and monetization.
  • Partner with executive leadership to identify new revenue opportunities and shape the future of The Bulwark's consumer business.

Lead Growth Marketing

  • Own paid acquisition strategy and investment across Meta, Google, podcast advertising, partnerships, and emerging growth channels.
  • Develop full‑funnel marketing strategies that drive subscriber acquisition and consumer revenue
  • Partner with Editorial, Creative, and Audience Development to bring major campaigns, launches, and promotional initiatives to market.
  • Ensure every marketing investment is measured against clear acquisition, conversion, retention, and revenue goals.

Optimize the Consumer Business

  • Define lifecycle marketing strategy across onboarding, upgrades, renewals, retention, and win‑back.
  • Establish experimentation frameworks for paywalls, pricing, promotional offers, and packaging.
  • Develop audience segmentation and personalization strategies that improve subscriber lifetime value.
  • Partner with Analytics to build forecasting, attribution, and performance measurement that informs business decisions.

Scale the Growth Organization

  • Build and develop a high‑performing growth organization as the business scales.
  • Improve marketing operations, experimentation, forecasting, and measurement capabilities.
  • Partner across Editorial, Audience Operations, Finance, Events, Product, and Executive Leadership to execute the company's growth strategy.
  • Evaluate new products, channels, and platform opportunities that expand consumer revenue.
About You
  • Significant experience leading consumer revenue, subscriptions, memberships, product marketing, or digital consumer businesses.
  • A track record of growing subscriber, membership, or recurring‑revenue businesses through acquisition, retention, and audience engagement.
  • Deep expertise in paid media, lifecycle marketing, conversion optimization, and growth strategy.
  • Experience managing meaningful paid media budgets across channels including Meta, Google, podcast advertising, partnerships, and other growth initiatives.
  • Strong analytical skills and fluency with forecasting, subscriber economics, cohort analysis, attribution, performance measurement, and experimentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop growth strategy and influence executive decision‑making through data, experimentation, and commercial insight.
  • Comfort operating in fast‑moving, resource‑constrained environments where strategy and execution go hand in hand.
  • Experience navigating platform constraints and identifying creative ways to drive growth; familiarity with Substack is a plus.
  • Strong cross‑functional leadership skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with editorial, product, audience operations, business, analytics, and executive leadership teams.
  • Curiosity, ownership, sound judgment, and a builder's mindset.
  • Alignment with The Bulwark's mission and enthusiasm for helping grow one of the most engaged communities in media.

We want people at The Bulwark to thrive. We provide:

  • Full employer‑sponsored health plans
  • 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Generous vacation and paid time off
