The Public Works Department, as a division of the City of Rochester, Minnesota, is responsible for planning, programming, design, constructing, and maintaining public works facilities.
This includes street infrastructure, street lighting, traffic control, sanitary and storm water, water main, and waste water treatment facilities, as well as on-street and off-street parking, and coordination of mass transit modes. Nature of Work The Traffic Signal Technician performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic traffic signal control devices and related systems in the Traffic Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, troubleshooting, repairing, modifying, and maintaining traffic signals, decorative pedestrian lighting, and holiday outlets; perform locates of underground facilities; installing and inspecting electrical equipment; and maintaining inventory, compiling records, and preparing reports.
Work schedule -The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Pay - The 2026 starting wage is $34.82 to $37.12 per hour with advancement to $54.88. Benefits- This position is eligible for benefits offered by the City of Rochester

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES *Troubleshoot, repair, modify, and maintain traffic signals, decorative pedestrian lighting, and holiday outlets Troubleshoot, test, and repair traffic signals, including electronic traffic signal components, cabinets, wiring, and electrical and fiber optic communications equipment.
Repair and maintain downtown sidewalk lighting and holiday lighting outlets. Operate lift trucks. Make adjustments and updates to traffic signal controller timings.
Keep records updated and prepare reports. Work with spreadsheets and databases. Perform periodic testing of traffic signal conflict monitors.
Maintain an inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment. Routine maintenance of signal cabinets including cleaning, lubing, and filter changing. Respond to afterhours traffic signal failures or damage.
*Perform locates of underground facilities (Gopher State One-Call Locates) Mark the location of underground traffic signal and sidewalk lighting/outlet facilities, and City of Rochester fiber optics. Maintain Gopher State One-Call records. Respond to afterhours emergency locates.
*Install and inspect electrical equipment Install replacement and modified traffic signal controller cabinets and other components. Repair or install minor wiring, lighting, and electrical equipment in public works buildings, including the traffic operations building and street maintenance buildings. Inspect contractor constructed traffic signal projects to verify work is completed to contract specifications.
Perform other duties as assigned or necessary. * ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Two (2) years of college or technical school training in electrical or electronics related field and four (4) years of experience installing, troubleshooting, maintaining and/or repairing electrical or electronic equipment.
