Job description

ROAD CREW LEADER

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs difficult semiskilled and skilled work supervising and participating in the work of a maintenance, repair, or construction crew; performs related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Road Superintendent. Limited supervision is exercised over an assigned work crew.
TYPICAL TASKS:
• Assigns, supervises, and participates in the work of semiskilled and/or skilled workers and equipment operators in the repair, maintenance or construction of streets, drainage facilities, municipal grounds and facilities, leaf collection, curb replacement, and grading work.
• Performs or assists in performing more difficult repair and construction tasks.
• Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions.
• Makes and adjusts work assignments on the job.
• Operates a variety of construction and maintenance equipment including backhoe, front end loader, grader, dump trucks, steel and rubber tire roller, leaf collection equipment, street sweeper, tractor, mower, and related equipment.
• Inspects vehicles and equipment prior to use.
• Prepares work reports.
• Trains and instructs subordinates.
• Performs related tasks as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the trade(s) required in road maintenance, repair and/or construction work; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; ability to assign and supervise the work of others; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; ability to skillfully use the specialized tools and operate equipment related to the area assigned; ability to work independently; good physical condition enough to perform labor intensive work tasks.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and experience in maintenance, repair, or construction work. Knowledge of computers and other electronic data collection.
