Job description

We are seeking an experienced Commercial Construction Project Manager specializing in heavy underground utility construction to oversee and manage projects from pre-construction through closeout. This role is responsible for planning, budgeting, scheduling, client coordination, subcontractor management, and ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience managing underground wet and dry utility projects including water, sewer, storm drain, gas, electrical duct bank, telecommunications, and site infrastructure work for commercial, municipal, and industrial developments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple heavy civil and underground utility construction projects simultaneously
  • Oversee project lifecycle including estimating support, planning, procurement, execution, and closeout
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, and cost controls
  • Coordinate with owners, developers, engineers, municipalities, inspectors, and subcontractors
  • Review contracts, drawings, specifications, and project documents
  • Lead project meetings and provide regular progress updates to stakeholders
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, and project documentation
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards and company safety policies
  • Monitor labor productivity, equipment utilization, and material procurement
  • Identify and resolve project risks, conflicts, and field issues proactively
  • Support field superintendent(s) and foremen with operational and logistical needs
  • Track project financial performance including forecasting, billing, and job costing
  • Maintain quality control standards throughout all phases of construction
  • Assist in business development and client relationship management

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in commercial heavy civil or underground utility construction project management
  • Strong knowledge of underground utility installation methods, sequencing, and safety requirements
  • Experience managing:
    • Water mains
    • Sanitary sewer systems
    • Storm drainage systems
    • Gas lines
    • Dry utility infrastructure
    • Earthwork, Grading, SEC
    • Site development projects
  • Ability to read and interpret civil plans, specifications, and blueprints
  • Proficiency with project management software such as Procore, P6 or MS Project, Bluebeam, etc.
  • Strong understanding of construction scheduling, budgeting, and cost controls
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with public works and municipal utility projects
  • Knowledge of DOT, AHJ, and municipal permitting processes
  • OSHA 30 certification, training related to construction
  • Experience with self-perform excavation and utility crews
  • Estimating or preconstruction experience
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or related field
