What is a construction materials tester?

Construction Materials Testers are professionals who evaluate the quality and properties of construction materials like concrete, soil, asphalt, and steel. They perform field and laboratory tests to ensure materials meet project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. What does a construction materials tester do?

The responsibilities of a construction materials tester include performing inspections in the field for construction projects. You do soil density testing to ensure all materials conform to construction plans, specifications, and guidelines set by the ASTM standards organization. You also conduct sampling, inspect concrete, asphalt, and other materials as needed, document the results, and then prepare a daily field report summarizing each observation and test calculation. There are also positions where you complete these tests in a laboratory. Your duties may require you to work nights and weekends on occasion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a construction materials tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Construction Materials Tester, you need a solid understanding of material properties, construction standards, and testing procedures, often backed by a high school diploma or associate degree in a related field. Familiarity with laboratory testing equipment, moisture meters, and certifications such as ACI or NICET are commonly required.
