Job Title: Construction InspectorJob Description

The Construction Inspector will support the Transportation Department at the headquarters in Memphis, TN by providing field inspection services on roadway, bridge, drainage, and utility projects. Working closely with an Inspection Supervisor and a team of inspectors, this role focuses on ensuring construction work complies with project plans, specifications, and applicable standards across concrete, asphalt, earthwork, traffic control, and Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control (EPSC). The position offers the opportunity to contribute to important infrastructure projects while applying technical expertise in construction materials testing and field inspection.

Responsibilities
  • Perform construction inspection services on roadway and bridge projects, including drainage structures and utilities, to verify compliance with project plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
  • Inspect concrete, asphalt, earthwork, grading, and other civil construction activities to ensure proper materials, placement, and workmanship.
  • Monitor traffic control setups and work zone safety measures to help maintain safe conditions for workers and the traveling public.
  • Observe and document Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control (EPSC) measures and environmental field conditions to support regulatory compliance.
  • Use inspection equipment, including nuclear gauges and other testing devices, to perform construction materials testing such as concrete testing and aggregate testing.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and timely inspection reports, logs, and documentation related to daily construction activities and test results.
  • Coordinate with project teams to communicate field findings, potential issues, and recommended corrective actions.
  • Support project management activities by tracking progress, identifying deviations from plans, and assisting with resolution of construction-related challenges.
  • Participate in inspection activities on highway and infrastructure projects, including wastewater and other civil engineering-related work as needed.
  • Maintain a strong focus on construction safety and health practices during all field activities.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working on roadway and bridge type construction projects.
  • Hands-on experience with construction inspection in civil construction environments.
  • Knowledge of concrete, asphalt, earthwork, grading, and roadway construction methods and standards.
  • Ability to perform and interpret construction materials testing, including concrete testing and aggregate testing.
  • Familiarity with traffic control and work zone safety practices on highway and roadway projects.
  • Experience working in environmental field conditions, including erosion control and wastewater-related infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in using inspection equipment, including nuclear gauge and related testing devices.
  • Understanding of civil engineering and construction management principles as they apply to infrastructure projects.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to document field observations clearly and accurately.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with inspectors, supervisors, and project teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • 10-hour OSHA Construction Safety & Health certification is a plus.
  • Nuclear Gauge Technician certification is a plus.
  • TDOT/ACI Concrete Technician certification is a plus.
  • Asphalt Roadway or Plant Technician certification is a plus.
  • Work Zone Traffic Control/Flagging certification is a plus.
  • Background in civil engineering or construction management is beneficial.
  • Experience with construction materials testing and infrastructure projects enhances suitability for the role.
Work Environment

This role is based at the headquarters in Memphis, TN and primarily involves field work on transportation infrastructure projects such as roadways, bridges, drainage structures, and utilities.
