Job description

ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Paralegal in theย Programย onย Freedom Religion and Belief of the ACLU's National office in Washington, DC. This is aย hybrid roleย that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eightย (8) days per month.ย 

Fromย itsย earliestย daysย supporting conscientiousย objectorsย toย warย andย defendingย Johnย Scopesย in the infamous "Monkey Trial" of 1925, the ACLU has worked tirelessly to defend the right to religious liberty nationwide. Today, the national ACLU's Program on Freedom Religion and Beliefย protectsย thisย fundamentalย rightย byย helpingย to ensureย thatย governmentalย lawsย andย practices neither promote religion nor interfere with its free exercise. The Program fights to preserve religious freedom and the right of individual conscience through an integrated strategy of litigation, education, and public advocacy.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. It is represented by ACLU Staff United (ASU).

  • Cite-check,ย format,ย andย proofreadย documents,ย includingย legalย briefs,ย memoranda, demand letters, and other correspondenceย 
  • Conductย legalย researchย andย monitorย cases onย Westlawย 
  • Assistย inย carryingย outย otherย litigation-relatedย tasks,ย includingย editingย discoveryย requests and responses, reviewing evidence, and preparing for depositionsย 
  • Conductย Internetย andย otherย factualย researchย inย connectionย withย prospectiveย orย ongoing litigation, policy matters, or public education effortsย 
  • Workย withย theย Programย attorneysย toย trackย stateย legislationย andย conductย relatedย researchย 
  • Maintainย andย ensureย theย accuracyย ofย theย Program'sย litigationย docketย andย calendar,ย and organize and maintain litigation and policy filesย

COMPENSATION
The ACLU is committed to equity, transparency, and clarity in pay. Consistent with our compensation philosophy, there is a set salary for each role based on geographic work location. The annual salary for this position isย $81,166 (Level K), reflecting the salary of a position based in New York, NY.ย  Salaries are subject to a regional pay adjustment if authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.ย ย
