What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Configuration Control Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Configuration Control Manager, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a background in engineering or information systems, often supported by a relevant degree or certification such as CMII or PMP. Familiarity with configuration management tools (like IBM Rational, PTC Windchill, or CMDB systems) and document control software is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills help ensure effective coordination between cross-functional teams and stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for maintaining accurate records, managing changes efficiently, and ensuring product integrity throughout a project's lifecycle.

What are Configuration Control Managers?

Configuration Control Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and maintaining the integrity of a project's configuration throughout its lifecycle. They manage changes to product designs, documents, and specifications, ensuring that all modifications are properly evaluated, approved, documented, and implemented. Their work ensures that all stakeholders are working from the correct and current version of project assets, and helps prevent errors or inconsistencies caused by unauthorized changes. Configuration Control Managers often work closely with engineering, quality assurance, and project management teams to ensure compliance with industry standards and organizational procedures.

How does a Configuration Control Manager typically interact with engineering and project management teams?

A Configuration Control Manager plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between engineering and project management teams by ensuring that all product changes are systematically evaluated, coordinated, and documented. They regularly facilitate meetings to review proposed changes, clarify requirements, and resolve discrepancies, ensuring all stakeholders are aligned. Effective communication and collaboration are essential, as the manager must balance technical accuracy, project timelines, and compliance requirements, ultimately supporting smooth project delivery and minimizing risks of misconfiguration.

Overview:
Global Power Components is a privately held, financially sound, growing manufacturer of UL heavy gauge steel fuel tanks, trailers, large generator enclosures, and modular metal enclosures for housing fully equipped electrical distribution and control equipment. As a result of our continuing expansion and continued organizational growth, we are looking for a motivated Product Engineer to join our team.
Internal Manufacturing Product Definition
•Own the integrity of the released product definition within PLM prior to handoff to Manufacturing Engineering.
•Ensure EBOM, CAD models, drawings, configuration rules, and revision levels are complete, consistent, and aligned before release.
•Define and maintain standard product configurations to minimize custom variation and manufacturing complexity.
•Serve as the technical authority for how the product is defined, structured, and controlled within manufacturing systems.
•Partner with Manufacturing Engineering during MBOM development to ensure intent is preserved and discrepancies are resolved.
•Drive continuous improvement of product data governance and release quality processes.
Product Definition & Configuration Management
•Own product definition beyond design intent, including configuration, assembly structure, and documentation readiness.
•Ensure product configurations align with customer requirements, commercial agreements, and internal standards.
•Maintain alignment between design documentation, product structures, and released configurations.
Engineering Change Ownership (ECR / ECN)
•Own the initiation, coordination, and execution of Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
•Manage front-end change requests originating from Sales, PMs, Manufacturing, Quality, or site feedback.

•Ensure approved changes are properly implemented, documented, and communicated across all affected teams.
Process Discipline & Continuous Improvement (Product Engineer-aligned)
•Enforce structured engineering release and change control processes to ensure product definition integrity prior to manufacturing handoff.
•Monitor product data quality within PLM, identifying recurring issues in revisions, configurations, effectivity, and documentation completeness.
•Identify systemic gaps in product definition workflows and drive corrective improvements to prevent downstream manufacturing disruption.
•Develop and maintain product-specific governance standards, release checklists, and validation criteria.
•Support continuous improvement of PLM-ERP integration processes to improve alignment, traceability, and change accuracy.
