As a computer support specialist, employees of your company or direct users of your system's services may seek advice and troubleshooting help from you to resolve their technical issues. You may provide assistance over the phone or internet, or if the network users are local, you may offer hands-on support in person to solve IT problems. Duties may include removing computer viruses, setting up new accounts, uploading software, or removing old programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer support specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Support Specialist, you need strong troubleshooting abilities, knowledge of computer hardware and software, and typically an associate degree or relevant certifications such as CompTIA A+. • Document troubleshooting steps, resolutions, and user interactions in the ticketing system.
  • Escalate complex technical issues to senior IT staff, infrastructure teams, or third-party vendors when appropriate.
  • Maintain a high level of customer service and communicate technical information clearly to non-technical users.
  • Provide onsite desktop support when hands-on assistance is required.
  • Assist with workstation moves, hardware replacements, equipment installations, and other onsite IT projects.
  • Follow IT security, access-control, data protection, and company policies.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in Help Desk, Service Desk, Desktop Support, IT Support, or Technical Support.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft 365 / Office 365 environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows 10/11 desktop operating systems.
  • Experience with Active Directory and/or Microsoft Entra ID/Azure AD.
  • Experience with password resets, account administration, and user access issues.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience troubleshooting laptops, desktops, monitors, printers, docking stations, and peripherals.
  • Familiarity with VPN, Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and basic networking concepts.
  • Experience working with a ticketing/help desk system.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills and a professional, patient approach to working with end users.
  • Ability to work independently in a primarily remote environment.
  • Ability and willingness to provide occasional onsite desktop support when required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Intune / Endpoint Manager.
  • Experience with Microsoft Entra ID and Microsoft 365 administration.
