Palmetto Bluff is nestled along the May River in the Lowcountry of South Carolina between Hilton Head Island and Savannah. As an award winning 20,000 acre development, the development encompasses a private member’s only club which includes a marina, restaurants, an equestrian center, a shooting club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, The Crossroads Reversable King Collins Golf Course, Anson Point Golf Course designed by Coore and Crenshaw, a lawn and racquet club, a community farm, and more. In addition, Palmetto Bluff has an extensive nature preserve, walking trails, retail shopping, art gallery, and a vibrant village, all which pay homage to the region’s rich heritage.

Job Summary:

The Crossroads Assistant In Training reports directly to the Crossroads Head and Assistant Golf Course Superintendents. Under the Crossroads Golf Course Superintendents supervision, the Crossroads Assistant In Training supports the management, health, and playing condition of the golf course greens, tees, fairways, roughs, cart paths, trees, native areas, etc. The Crossroads Assistant In Training participates with the planning and prioritizing of work schedules, maintaining records and inventory, application of products, project oversite, irrigation repair and maintenance, equipment maintenance, budget management, and being a part of the Palmetto Bluff Golf Club team.

Essential Job Functions:

Job duties include, although are not limited to:

  • Participate in management of all golf course related areas. (greens, tees, fairways, roughs, range, etc.)
  • Participate in maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of irrigation system.
  • Monitor pump station, fertigation, and wells.
  • Monitor and organize inventory of irrigation, fertilizer, and pesticide supplies.
  • Calibration, maintenance, and operation of application equipment
  • Develop knowledge of pesticides and fertilizers mode of action and safety precautions
  • Clean and organize all shop facilities.
  • Develop knowledge of equipment maintenance
  • Participate in irrigation monitoring and Lynx system operation.
  • Participate in and oversee projects.
  • Participates in Palmetto Bluff Club leadership activities.
  • Participates in daily and weekly planning.
  • Develops skills to become a golf course superintendent.

Qualifications:

  • Desire to become an elite golf course superintendent.
  • Actively working to obtain a turf certificate or associate degree in Turfgrass Science
  • Obtain South Carolina certification or licensing as a pesticide applicator within 6 months of hire.
  • Familiarity with and knowledge of the game of golf
  • Willingness to work hard to get the job done.
  • Developing knowledge of:
    • Construction, turf establishment, and cultural practices employed on golf course putting greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers.
    • Planting and refinement of the turfgrass used on golf courses.
    • Proper use of fertilizers and soil conditioners
    • Pest diagnosis and control methods, including materials.
    • Drainage systems
    • Watering practices and irrigation systems
    • Equipment operation, service, and repair
    • Computer applications and operation
    • Ability to schedule and supervise work to achieve the most efficient use of employees and resources.
    • Effectively communicate with all staff, members, vendors, architects, owners, consultants, and fellow professionals
  • Be outgoing and friendly to members and associates.
  • Treat everyone with respect

Physical Requirements:

  • The majority of tasks are performed outdoors in variable weather conditions, including hot, cold, windy and rainy.
  • Temperatures can be extreme but are usually moderate.
  • Frequently works near moving/mechanical parts.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to reach with arms and hands, bend, and stoop, remain at post standing for periods of time, walk for a long distance, and is required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color and peripheral.
  • Due to the busy nature of the position the associate must be able to routinely work well under pressure, remain calm, and be tactful with co-workers.
