What is a computer science apprenticeship?

A Computer Science Apprenticeship is a structured, hands-on training program that combines practical work experience with academic learning. Apprentices typically work under the guidance of experienced professionals while gaining technical skills in areas such as programming, software development, and cybersecurity. These programs often lead to industry-recognized certifications or a full-time job upon completion. They are ideal for individuals looking to enter the tech field without a traditional degree or seeking hands-on experience while studying.

What kind of mentorship or training can I expect during a computer science apprenticeship?

As a Computer Science Apprentice, you will typically receive structured mentorship from experienced software engineers and participate in hands-on training sessions. Expect regular code reviews, pair programming opportunities, and collaborative projects that help reinforce your learning. Many programs also provide access to internal documentation, technical workshops, and opportunities to shadow professionals across different teams, giving you a broader view of the field. This support structure is designed to help you rapidly build practical skills and prepare for a full-time role in computer science upon completion of the apprenticeship.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a computer science apprenticeship, and why are they important?

To excel in a Computer Science Apprenticeship, you need foundational knowledge of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), basic understanding of algorithms and data structures, and a willingness to learn on the job. Exposure to version control systems like Git and familiarity with development environments or basic software engineering principles are often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative attitude help apprentices integrate seamlessly into development teams. These skills are crucial for adapting to new technologies, contributing effectively to projects, and gaining the practical experience needed for a successful tech career.

Job description

Do you want to do work that matters, alongside supportive leaders who will help you grow faster than you ever thought possible? Are you a creative problem-solver who is energized by challenges? You’ve come to the right place.

YOUR IMPACT

You will provide user-centered design and oversight for complex and innovative products across digital and analog touchpoints, including web, mobile and tablet experiences. You will join our Social, Healthcare and Public Entities (SHaPE) Tech team in the U.S., supporting multiple client engagements. This team of technologists is passionate about creating the very best products for McKinsey consultants, software engineers and data scientists. You will create simple, intuitive and attractive interfaces that engage users, help them achieve their goals and map clearly to business, user and technical requirements. Acting as an advocate for the end user, you will advise product teams on how design decisions shape product vision, user experience and usability. You will often own multiple projects at the same time with the support of other designers and development teams, while remaining hands-on throughout discovery, design, development and launch. You will design and execute qualitative and quantitative research programs, individually or with senior colleagues, to generate insights that inform product strategy and the design process. You will create professional-quality deliverables that clearly communicate UX strategy, design rationale and research findings, including work plans, research protocols, personas, use cases, user flows, workflows, wireframes, prototypes, page maps, product specifications and other design documentation. You will partner closely with product managers, consultants, designers, developers and architects to create innovative digital solutions, drive decisions with data, track issues, estimate resource needs and schedules, and ensure design specifications are implemented effectively despite system complexity or constraints. You will oversee and mentor UI/UX designers through key steps of the design process, contribute to workshops and design sprints, and help create, adopt and improve design practices, patterns and guidelines. As needed, you will lead internal initiatives and specific workstreams that advance the Design discipline in alignment with the practice vision.

YOUR GROWTH

Driving lasting impact and building long-term capabilities with our clients is not easy work. You are the kind of person who thrives in a high performance/high reward culture - doing hard things, picking yourself up when you stumble, and having the resilience to try another way forward. In return for your drive, determination, and curiosity, we'll provide the resources, mentorship, and opportunities you need to become a stronger leader faster than you ever thought possible. Your colleagues—at all levels—will invest deeply in your development, just as much as they invest in delivering exceptional results for clients. Every day, you'll receive apprenticeship, coaching, and exposure that will accelerate your growth in ways you won’t find anywhere else. When you join us, you will have:

  • Continuous learning:Our learning and apprenticeship culture, backed by structured programs, is all about helping you grow while creating an environment where feedback is clear, actionable, and focused on your development. The real magic happens when you take the input from others to heart and embrace the fast-paced learning experience, owning your journey.

You’ll make a tangible impact by offering innovative ideas and practical solutions, all while upholding our unwavering commitment to ethics and integrity. We not only encourage diverse perspectives, but they are critical in driving us toward the best possible outcomes.
  • Global community:With colleagues across 65+ countries and over 100 different nationalities, our firm’s diversity fuels creativity and helps us come up with the best solutions for our clients. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from exceptional colleagues with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • World-class benefits:On top of a competitive salary (based on your location, experience, and skills), we provide a comprehensive benefits package to enable holistic well-being for you and your family.
YOUR QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience, such as information science, human-computer interaction, interface design or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of relevant UX/UI, product design or related experience
  • Experience planning and conducting qualitative and quantitative user research across the product development lifecycle
  • Ability to shape product strategy and vision, then translate it into actionable, buildable design solutions
  • Adaptability to new tools, systems and ways of working required to meet product and initiative needs
  • Proficiency with modern design, prototyping, research and collaboration tools such as Figma, Sketch, InVision, Miro, Adobe Creative Suite, Jira and related platforms
  • Strong command of UX methods and deliverables, including design thinking, concept sprint facilitation, user research, competitive analysis, heuristic evaluation, personas, scenarios, user flows, information architecture, wireframes, prototypes, QA testing, visual design and specification documentation
  • Familiarity with Agile and Lean ways of working, as well as foundational web technologies such as HTML and CSS
