What is a Computer Science Apprenticeship job?

A Computer Science Apprenticeship is a structured, hands-on training program that combines practical work experience with academic learning. Apprentices typically work under the guidance of experienced professionals while gaining technical skills in areas such as programming, software development, and cybersecurity. These programs often lead to industry-recognized certifications or a full-time job upon completion. They are ideal for individuals looking to enter the tech field without a traditional degree or seeking hands-on experience while studying.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computer Science Apprenticeship position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Computer Science Apprenticeship, you need foundational knowledge of programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), basic understanding of algorithms and data structures, and a willingness to learn on the job. Exposure to version control systems like Git and familiarity with development environments or basic software engineering principles are often expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative attitude help apprentices integrate seamlessly into development teams. These skills are crucial for adapting to new technologies, contributing effectively to projects, and gaining the practical experience needed for a successful tech career.

What kind of mentorship or training can I expect during a Computer Science Apprenticeship?

As a Computer Science Apprentice, you will typically receive structured mentorship from experienced software engineers and participate in hands-on training sessions. Expect regular code reviews, pair programming opportunities, and collaborative projects that help reinforce your learning. Many programs also provide access to internal documentation, technical workshops, and opportunities to shadow professionals across different teams, giving you a broader view of the field. This support structure is designed to help you rapidly build practical skills and prepare for a full-time role in computer science upon completion of the apprenticeship.

Job description

Do you want to do work that matters, alongside supportive leaders who will help you grow faster than you ever thought possible? Are you a creative problem-solver who is energized by challenges? You've come to the right place.
YOUR IMPACT
You'll be responsible for creating next-generation data and analytic solutions that help us serve clients and stay on the cutting edge in the industry.
You will create next-generation data and analytics solutions that deliver impactful insights for clients, leveraging large-scale medical and pharmacy claims data to inform strategic decision-making. You will partner with client teams to produce high-quality analyses and enable rapid, data-driven client development work, ensuring that insights are actionable and aligned with client needs.
In this role, you will design and develop scalable, reusable solutions and products that generate data-driven insights, advocating for the thoughtful use of advanced analytics tools and methodologies. You will guide teams on selecting the right datasets and analytic strategies, ensuring that the solutions delivered maximize client impact. Additionally, you will collaborate across practices, analytics groups, and technical teams to ensure efforts are synergistic and leverage cutting-edge approaches.
You will act as a thought partner to internal and external stakeholders, showcasing McKinsey's data ecosystem and capabilities while aligning solutions with client objectives. You will also drive awareness of the firm's data risk policies, refining and operationalizing KPIs to ensure compliance and accountability.
The Data CoE is a highly visible team and a high-profile position; the Data CoE works regularly with McKinsey life sciences senior leaders and clients. McKinsey's Life Sciences practice serves clients across multiple functional service lines spanning Commercial, R&D, and Operations.
Finally, you will continuously seek opportunities to enhance the value delivered to clients, challenging the status quo and integrating innovative approaches to data and analytics where they drive measurable impact.
YOUR GROWTH
Driving lasting impact and building long-term capabilities with our clients is not easy work. You are the kind of person who thrives in a high performance/high reward culture - doing hard things, picking yourself up when you stumble, and having the resilience to try another way forward.
In return for your drive, determination, and curiosity, we'll provide the resources, mentorship, and opportunities you need to become a stronger leader faster than you ever thought possible. Your colleagues-at all levels-will invest deeply in your development, just as much as they invest in delivering exceptional results for clients. Every day, you'll receive apprenticeship, coaching, and exposure that will accelerate your growth in ways you won't find anywhere else.
When you join us, you will have:

You'll make a tangible impact by offering innovative ideas and practical solutions, all while upholding our unwavering commitment to ethics and integrity. We not only encourage diverse perspectives, but they are critical in driving us toward the best possible outcomes.
  • Global community: With colleagues across 65+ countries and over 100 different nationalities, our firm's diversity fuels creativity and helps us come up with the best solutions for our clients. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to learn from exceptional colleagues with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • World-class benefits: On top of a competitive salary (based on your location, experience, and skills), we provide a comprehensive benefits package to enable holistic well-being for you and your family.

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • Bachelor's or advanced professional degree in engineering, computer science, physical sciences, statistics, data science or medicine from a recognized accredited institution of higher learning, college, or university
