What are computer programmers?

Computer programmers are professionals who write, test, and maintain the code that allows software programs and applications to function. They translate designs and instructions created by software engineers or developers into logical sequences that computers can follow. Programmers use various programming languages, such as Python, Java, or C++, to create and troubleshoot software to ensure it runs smoothly. Their work is essential to the development of websites, apps, operating systems, and a wide range of digital tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Programmer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), problem-solving skills, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with software development tools, version control systems like Git, and sometimes certifications in specific languages or frameworks are commonly required. Attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure high-quality, efficient code development and effective teamwork in rapidly evolving technical environments.

What Does a Computer Programmer Do?

A computer programmer designs, tests, writes, debugs, and maintains the computer program code. The coding language is written for the computer to be able to comprehend it and take specific actions according to those commands. Computer programmers can work with existing code or create something entirely new. The objective of coding is to develop programs that act on specific controls and behaviors. Coders need to be able to work with specialized algorithms, logic, and app domain, as well. But the other key goal of a computer programmer is to design interfaces that regular non-technical users can easily understand and use.

What is the difference between Computer Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectComputer ProgrammerSoftware Developer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or related fieldUsually requires a bachelor's degree, often with additional experience or certifications
Work EnvironmentOften works in coding, debugging, and maintaining softwareDesigns, develops, tests, and maintains software applications
Industry UsageCommonly employed in IT, software firms, and tech departmentsFound in a wide range of industries including tech, finance, healthcare

While both roles involve coding and software creation, Computer Programmers primarily focus on writing and debugging code based on specifications, whereas Software Developers are involved in designing and building complete software solutions. The roles often overlap, but Developers typically have broader responsibilities in the software development lifecycle.

What are some typical challenges computer programmers face when working on large team projects?

Computer programmers working on large team projects often encounter challenges such as coordinating code changes, maintaining consistent coding standards, and managing dependencies between different components. Effective communication and the use of version control systems like Git are essential to prevent conflicts and ensure smooth collaboration. Additionally, programmers must often adapt to varying coding styles and workflows, making flexibility and a collaborative mindset important for success in team environments.

Overview & Responsibilities

Overview & Responsibilities

The Big Picture

This is a job for someone who sees the big picture-and the smallest detail. As a CAD/CAM Technician, you'll be at the center of our Service Parts manufacturing automation efforts. You'll build and maintain intelligent 3D part libraries, create machining programs, and help design parts kits that directly impact customer satisfaction. If you love solving problems, working with advanced software, and finding the most efficient way to make something, this role puts you in the driver's seat.

What You'll Do Day-to-Day

CNC Machining Support

  • Use Creo CAD to create family table-based part models for all components manufactured by Service Parts

  • Build and maintain a 3D library of CNC machine tables, fixture geometries, and tooling

  • Coordinate with manufacturing engineers to create machining program templates for each part family using CAM software

  • Ensure part family programs can be flexibly posted to various machines within the SVP fleet based on capacity and availability

  • Use CGTech Vericut for NC file validation before manufacturing release

  • Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) during the programming process

  • Determine optimal tooling and cutting parameters based on material and setup

Parts Kit Design & Coordination

  • Provide technical support for Elliott Parts Kits

  • Design parts kit layouts to meet internal and external customer needs-supporting growth, quality, and productivity

  • Review drawings for accuracy; obtain weights and dimensions of spare parts

  • Correct drawings as needed

  • Determine how each part will be packaged safely and cost-effectively for long-term storage and safe handling

  • Group and package parts into kits to ensure viability for outages

  • Create inspection matrices and engineering sketches for kit box orders

  • Coordinate with kit box vendors to approve layouts and ensure accuracy

  • Work with Project Planners and Engineering on required drawing updates

General Manufacturing Support

  • Create and maintain BOMs in Windchill for parts and products manufactured in-house by Service Parts (essential for MRP planning and Product Lifecycle Management)

  • Produce "conversion drawings" to give manufacturing usable documentation-including foreign language to English, metric to imperial, and manufacturing drawings for non-Elliott parts

  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, routing instructions, manuals, and specifications

How You'll Work

You'll coordinate closely with manufacturing engineering to determine the "best method" for manufacturing each part type-using available machinery and tools, planning contour-path machining, and working with integrated software systems. You'll also partner with the Customer Strategy team to determine optimal parts kit layouts that meet customer needs and expectations.

What Makes This Role Critical

This job is key to achieving Service Parts goals around manufacturing automation. You won't just be modeling parts-you'll be helping transform how we work.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate's Degree in Computer Aided Design and/or Computer Aided Manufacturing (required)

  • 6 years of experience in 3D modeling in a manufacturing environment

  • Strong understanding of services for technical products (or strong aptitude to learn)

Technical Skills

  • Understanding of family table concepts

  • Direct experience with PTC Creo CAD software (preferred)

  • Experience with VBA API scripts in Creo (a plus)

  • Experience with modeling automation-producing BOMs, drawings, or machining programs as outputs from robust CAD models

  • Experience with CAM software for multi-axis machining

  • Direct experience with PTC Creo CAM software (a plus)

  • CNC knowledge and programming fundamentals

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (V-Lookups, Macros, etc.)

  • Proficiency in other MS Office utilities: Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and Access

Soft Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills

  • Analytical mindset

  • Ability to manage multiple projects under strict timelines

  • Project management, organizational, and time management experience

  • Ability to influence other departments and disciplines to work together and meet customer needs

  • Problem-solving aptitude and desire to determine the most efficient way to manufacture parts

  • Willingness to learn new skills and perform new tasks

  • Ability to work independently
