About Electrified Thermal Solutions Boilers, furnaces, and kilns are the engines of our industrial economy, providing heat to melt steel, form cement, and transform chemicals. Historically, reaching this high-temperature heat required burning fossil fuels, making the industrial sector responsible for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions. 

Electrified Thermal Solutions has a simple and massive goal: to electrify industry.  

To do this, we are building the Joule Hive thermal battery (JHTB): an energy storage technology that converts and stores cheap, renewable electricity as high-temperature heat. Our vision is to mitigate gigatons of CO2 emissions per year by deploying the Joule Hive at every industrial furnace, turbine, boiler, and kiln.

About the Role: 

As a Design Engineering Intern, you will join our engineering team and play a pivotal role in scaling up our 1 MW Commercial Demonstration Product System to a First-of-a-Kind flagship Joule Hive product. This internship offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on a cutting-edge project in renewable energy technology. You will report to the Lead Structural Design Engineer. 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Own the specification, design and optimization of a critical sub-assembly within a commercial Thermal Energy Storage (TES) system 

  • Generate parts, assemblies, and drawings within CAD in collaboration with internal and external partners 

  • Leverage engineering analysis and simulation methods to inform design decisions impacting R&D prototyping and final product design 

  • Maintenance of detailed documentation throughout project work - including design specifications, CAD models, simulation results, and test reports. 

  • Regular progress updates and technical reports to project stakeholders 

About You:
  • Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. 

  • Proficiency in CAD software, such as SolidWorks or Onshape 

  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel and other tools for analytical means. 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment. 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Familiarity with Python or Matlab is a plus. 

  • Experience with renewable energy systems, thermal energy storage, or extreme temperature systems is a plus.
