Computer Programmer Contract information

What is a computer programmer contract?

A Computer Programmer Contract job is a temporary or project-based role where a programmer is hired for a specific duration or task. Contractors typically develop, test, and maintain software applications based on client requirements. They may work independently or through an agency, often with flexible schedules. Unlike full-time employees, contract programmers usually do not receive benefits like health insurance or paid time off. Compensation is often higher to account for this.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a computer programmer contract?

To thrive as a Computer Programmer Contract, you need strong programming knowledge, problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, experience with version control systems like Git, and familiarity with development environments are essential, while certifications such as Microsoft or Oracle developer credentials are valued. Excellent time management, communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new projects or teams will set you apart in contract roles. These skills and qualities ensure that contract programmers can efficiently deliver high-quality solutions, quickly integrate into diverse work environments, and meet the expectations of multiple clients.

What types of projects do computer programmer contracts typically work on, and how is workflow managed?

Computer Programmer Contractors often work on a variety of projects, including developing new software applications, updating existing systems, debugging code, or creating automation scripts based on client requirements. Workflows are usually managed through tools like Jira or Asana, and contractors collaborate remotely or on-site with development teams, business analysts, and project managers. Deadlines and deliverables are typically set by the client, and contractors may need to juggle multiple assignments simultaneously. The dynamic nature of contract work offers exposure to different industries and technologies, providing valuable experience and potential for career advancement.

What is the hourly rate for a computer programmer?

The hourly rate for a computer programmer varies based on experience, location, and specialization, but typically ranges from $25 to $100 or more. Contract computer programmers often charge higher rates to account for project scope and skill level, with rates increasing for those with expertise in specific programming languages or technologies.

Job description

Analog IC Layout Engineer – New Graduate

Location: Markham, Ontario
Employment Type: 12-Month Contract, with potential for renewal or extension

The Opportunity

TalentLab is working with a leading global semiconductor company to hire an early-career Analog IC Layout Engineer for its engineering team in Markham.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent Electrical or Computer Engineering graduate looking to begin their career in semiconductor design. You’ll work alongside experienced IC designers and layout engineers on advanced analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits, gaining hands-on experience with real production silicon.

Candidates who have completed a PEY, co-op, internship, or other practical experience in analog IC layout or semiconductor design will be particularly well suited to the role.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Develop and modify analog and mixed-signal IC layouts under the guidance of senior engineers.

  • Translate circuit schematics into physical layouts while considering performance, matching, parasitics, reliability, and manufacturability.

  • Perform physical verification including DRC (Design Rule Check) and LVS (Layout Versus Schematic).

  • Work with IC design engineers to understand circuit requirements and optimize layouts accordingly.

  • Support layout reviews, debugging, verification, and design iterations.

  • Gain exposure to advanced semiconductor process technologies and industry-standard IC design tools.

  • Collaborate with experienced engineers in a highly technical semiconductor development environment.

What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Microelectronics, or a closely related field.

  • Recent graduates and candidates completing their degree are encouraged to apply.

  • Academic or practical exposure to analog IC design, analog layout, VLSI, CMOS, or semiconductor device design.

  • Familiarity with IC layout concepts such as matching, symmetry, parasitic effects, routing, device placement, and design rules.

  • Exposure to Cadence Virtuoso or similar IC design/layout tools is strongly preferred.

  • Understanding of DRC and LVS verification.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Co-op, PEY, internship, research, or project experience involving analog IC layout is highly desirable.

Why This Role?

For a new graduate interested in analog semiconductor design, this is an opportunity to move directly into hands-on IC layout work with an established semiconductor engineering team. You’ll gain practical experience with production designs, advanced design tools, and experienced engineers while building a strong foundation for a career in analog and mixed-signal IC development.

This is an initial 12-month contract with the potential for renewal or extension based on business needs and performance.
