Oncor (together with its subsidiaries) operates the largest transmission and distribution system in Texas, delivering power to nearly 4 million homes and businesses and operating more than 145,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines in Texas.

Summary

The Telecom Network Technician Associate is the technical expert on multiple telecommunication protocols (microwave, fiber, two-way radio, various wireless networks, etc.) and is responsible for ensuring that the network is performing at optimum capacity. Depending on assignment, the Telecom Network Technician Associate may work independently or under the supervision of a higher-ranking Network Technician, usually a Senior, Lead, or Specialist. As a resource continues to work in this role, they will obtain a general knowledge of telecom design standards, applicable regulations (e.g., Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)/Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC CIP)), and processes and procedures related to this Telecom Network Technician Associate position. Technical certifications may be required depending on the specifics of this role.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, monitor, troubleshoot, and recommend changes to various field network solutions.
  • Keep abreast of technology changes, evaluate and recommend network components, and develop documentation and installation standards for these components.
  • Participate in both project and maintenance work related to the implementation of new telecommunication systems and the troubleshooting of existing telecommunication systems.
  • Work with vendors and service providers to assist in the diagnosis and resolution of network problems.
  • Develop, digitize, and update system and procedure documentation for all network systems and infrastructure.
  • Work in partnership with engineering, project management, and other technician groups across Oncor to implement communications solutions.
  • Plan and implement changes to the transport network while ensuring adherence to all change management policies and procedures.
  • Strive to resolve all problems efficiently and identify the root cause of every problem.
  • Coordinate all planned outages.
  • Communicate through verbal and written status reports as required.
  • Perform end-to-end analysis on the transport network using various monitoring and management tools.
  • With supervision, provide primary support for at least one major system (fiber optics, Advanced Metering System (AMS), microwave, two-way radio, Field Area Network (FAN), Distribution Automation (DA), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network, etc.) and secondary support on multiple minor systems.
  • Adhere to safe work practices to support the goal of no reportable accidents within the Technology department.
  • Be on call. The transport network is a 24x7 operation, and all personnel will be on call in the event of a problem.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
  • Bachelor's or associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Technology, Engineering, or another related field is encouraged to apply.
  • 1 to 2 years of experience in a Technology, Telecom, or Utility-related role is required.

  • General knowledge of telecommunications network design and architecture, various telecom/network equipment technologies, standards and regulatory requirements, and general technology system and process knowledge.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and internet/intranet applications.

  • The Network Technician Associate will be accountable for the timely completion of project tasks, as well as annual maintenance, within their assigned area and technology.
  • The Network Technician Associate will be accountable for ensuring adherence to change management and compliance processes in all field activities.
