Brightpoint Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education and is one of the largest of Virginia's 23 community colleges. The college is located within the Greater Richmond metropolitan area. It serves students and the community at its two campuses, in Chester and Midlothian; online; and in locations throughout its service area. Brightpoint Community College's mission is to provide quality educational opportunities that inspire student success and community vitality. It envisions a success story for every student.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Brightpoint Community College invites applications for a Part-Time Lab Technician to provide lab assistance to faculty and support the science laboratories (biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics, and funeral services - including the funeral services embalming lab). Current science offerings include courses in anatomy and physiology, biology, microbiology, chemistry, physics, embalming, and environmental science. The person in this position is responsible for assisting the lab manager in ordering lab equipment and supplies, providing laboratory support to full- and part-time faculty, and performing his or her duties using safe practices. This person will assist the lab manager and support the teaching laboratories at both Brightpoint campuses (Midlothian and Chester). The person in this position should have the ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include days, evenings, and/or weekends. This part-time position will not exceed 29 hours a week.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Knowledge of standard biological and chemical operations, equipment and procedures used in teaching laboratories, including safety practices. Demonstrated ability to conduct a variety of techniques and procedures related to preparation and maintenance of several teaching laboratories. Demonstrated ability to follow written protocols and standard operating procedures with attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively and utilize good organizational skills. Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory chemical hygiene, hazardous waste handling, and OSHA/CDC safety standards. Ability to maintain accurate laboratory inventory, records, and documentation. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a diverse population of faculty and staff. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team within a laboratory setting. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer with current software programs. Ability to lift and transport laboratory supplies and equipment and perform duties requiring extended standing, bending, and movement between laboratory spaces. Successful completion and passing of criminal background check is required.
Additional Considerations
Associate degree or higher in biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics, funeral services, or a related scientific field. Experience supporting college-level teaching laboratories in biology, chemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, environmental science, physics, or funeral services. Experience preparing laboratory reagents, solutions, cultures, specimens, or instructional materials for undergraduate laboratory courses.
