Overview
Microsoft Digital (MSD) develops and operates products and services used across Microsoft. The organization supports Microsoft teams by providing technologies and services designed to improve productivity, operational efficiency, and security. MSD employees contribute technical, business, and customer perspectives informed by experience implementing Microsoft and industry solutions at scale.
Microsoft Lab Services (MLS), within Microsoft Digital, provides secure physical and hybrid laboratory environments for Microsoft product engineering teams conducting research, product development, validation, testing, and hardware engineering.
The Global Lab Infrastructure Design Engineer supports the planning and design of Microsoft engineering laboratories. This service engineering role translates product-team requirements into data-informed infrastructure strategies and design specifications that contractors can use for new laboratories and facility modifications.
The role requires working knowledge of power, cooling, physical infrastructure, capacity planning, and high-level networking considerations. It also involves using data, approved artificial intelligence tools, and automation to support engineering analysis, documentation, and decision-making.
This position partners with MLS Site Operations, Deployment Project Engineering, Global Workplace Services, networking and facilities teams, and Microsoft product groups to assess existing capacity and develop longer-term global laboratory infrastructure strategies.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a repeatable global intake and design process that translates product-team hosting requirements into defined infrastructure criteria and design recommendations.
  • Evaluate existing MLS facilities for power, cooling, networking, security, serviceability, operational readiness, and available capacity before recommending expansion or new construction.
  • Support build-versus-modify decisions using operational data, documented assumptions, utilization targets, lifecycle considerations, and input from regional MLS Site Operations teams.
  • Prepare design-intent packages for contractors that document performance requirements, equipment profiles, infrastructure dependencies, constraints, risks, acceptance criteria, and outstanding decisions.
  • Partner with Global Workplace Services, architects, engineers, project managers, and contractors to incorporate MLS requirements into detailed design, pricing, construction, commissioning, and operational handoff.
  • Collaborate with MLS Deployment Project Engineering and Microsoft product engineering teams to assess hosting demand, equipment roadmaps, deployment sequencing, networking dependencies, and longer-term infrastructure requirements.
  • Use approved artificial intelligence, analytics, scripting, and automation tools to support intake analysis, capacity evaluation, design documentation, reusable standards, and workflow efficiency. Validate outputs using approved data sources and engineering review.
  • Define operational acceptance criteria and support readiness reviews addressing safety, serviceability, documentation, monitoring, support ownership, and lifecycle requirements.
  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, recommendations, risks, and decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute to global laboratory standards, documented lessons learned, reusable design patterns, and process improvements across MLS.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Cybersecurity, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, systems engineering, or industrial controls
    • OR equivalent experience. 3+ years of experience evaluating power, cooling, physical space, equipment placement, structured cabling, or networking requirements for laboratories, datacenters, research environments, or other technology-intensive facilities.

Other Requirements
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements. This position requires successful completion of the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% for site assessments, design reviews, project coordination, commissioning, and operational handoffs.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Cybersecurity, or related field AND 6+ years technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, systems engineering, or industrial controls
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Data Science, Cybersecurity, or related field AND 8+ years technical experience in software engineering, network engineering, service engineering, systems engineering, or industrial controls
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience supporting research and development laboratories, hardware engineering environments, high-density computing, artificial intelligence infrastructure, liquid-cooled equipment, quantum systems, or comparable technical environments.
  • Experience assessing facility capacity and utilization using power telemetry, cooling limits, rack or bench availability, equipment characteristics, operational constraints, and projected demand.
  • Experience working with architects, professional engineers, facilities teams, project managers, and contractors during design development, construction, commissioning, or operational handoff.
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution, rack power, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, cooling dependencies, structured cabling, equipment placement, service clearances, and physical support requirements.
  • Knowledge of networking requirements, including local and wide area networks, out-of-band management, keyboard-video-mouse systems, network racks, connectivity dependencies, security considerations, and deployment readiness.
  • Experience using approved artificial intelligence, analytics, scripting, automation, or structured data to support technical analysis, capacity planning, documentation, and infrastructure decisions.
  • Experience documenting assumptions, tradeoffs, risks, acceptance criteria, and validation requirements for technical decisions.
  • Ability to communicate engineering tradeoffs in writing and verbally to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience translating business, product, or equipment requirements into infrastructure design criteria, technical specifications, scopes of work, design narratives, option analyses, or engineering recommendations.
  • Experience coordinating technical work across stakeholder groups, including operations, facilities, networking, engineering, construction, customers, suppliers, and external design partners.

Service Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
