What Do Computer Hardware Engineers Do?

Computer hardware engineers design and test new computer hardware components, such as screens, motherboards, and memory. They may also work with products that include a computer system, such as cars, home entertainment components, and appliances that connect to the internet. Your responsibilities include creating design drawings and collaborating with manufacturers to ensure the devices are produced to specifications. You may also work with software developers to ensure compatibility. You must be able to read and design technical drawings and be able to communicate effectively with all participants in the project.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Hardware Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Hardware Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, computer architecture, and circuit design, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer or electrical engineering. Familiarity with hardware description languages (such as VHDL or Verilog), CAD software, and industry certifications like CompTIA or Cisco is often important. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help engineers collaborate and innovate within multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure the effective design, testing, and optimization of reliable hardware systems that meet modern computing needs.

What are some common challenges faced by computer hardware engineers in collaborative projects with software teams?

Computer hardware engineers often collaborate closely with software developers to ensure seamless integration between hardware components and software applications. A frequent challenge is aligning timelines and technical requirements, as hardware development cycles can differ from software schedules. Effective communication and a strong understanding of both disciplines are essential to address compatibility issues and meet project deadlines. Building strong cross-functional relationships helps resolve these challenges and leads to successful product development.

What are computer hardware engineers?

Computer hardware engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test computer systems and components such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, networks, and routers. They work to ensure that computer hardware functions efficiently and integrates seamlessly with software. These engineers are often involved in research, prototyping, and overseeing the manufacturing of hardware equipment. Their work is crucial in advancing technology and improving the performance of computer systems.

What is the difference between Computer Hardware Engineer vs Computer Network Architect?

AspectComputer Hardware EngineerComputer Network Architect
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Engineering or related field; certifications like Cisco CCNA are commonBachelor's in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related; certifications like Cisco CCNP are typical
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and developing computer hardware; labs and engineering facilitiesDesigning and implementing network systems; offices and data centers
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, hardware manufacturing, research labsTelecommunications, large enterprises, data centers

Computer Hardware Engineers focus on designing and developing physical computer components, while Computer Network Architects plan and build data communication networks. Both roles require technical certifications and often work in technology-driven environments, but their core responsibilities differ significantly in scope and focus.

Job description

Join the team bringing advanced autonomy to the built world
At Bedrock, we're moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team is composed of industry veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we're deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction machinery across the country, accelerating project schedules of billion-dollar infrastructure projects and improving safety on job sites. Backed by $350M in funding, we're working quickly to close the gap between America's surging demand for housing, data centers, manufacturing hubs, and the construction industry's growing labor shortage.
This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You'll collaborate with construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can't touch. If you're ready to apply cutting-edge technology to solve meaningful problems alongside a talented team-we'd love to have you join us.
We're growing our sizable fleet of retrofitted autonomous construction machines and we're looking for a talented hardware engineer to help define system architecture, test and integrate modules into the system, and generally provide coverage on critical HW workstreams. You will work alongside senior engineers responsible for designing these systems, and be responsible for delivering highly robust and capable autonomous HW systems to the field.
Key Qualifications:
  • Strong foundational knowledge in traditional HW engineering subjects such as electrical design, testing, and deployment of hardware systems in rugged outdoor environments
  • Experience leading large HW development programs from ideation through proto, EVT, DVT, and production stages
  • Experience with some or all of the following:
    • High performance/power edge compute including multi-CPU platforms with significant GPU resources
    • Common autonomous sensing technologies including lidar (spinning, flash), camera (visible, SWIR, NIR, etc...), radar, GNSS, and IMUs
    • Packaging and integration strategies for high performance HW systems in rugged environments including high shock/vibe, wide temp ranges, IP, and solar loading
    • High speed signaling including GSML, multi gigabit ethernet, RF
  • Proficiency in compiled (C/C++/Rust), shell (linux bash), or runtime (Python) languages with ability to prototype and debug software components of HW systems as well as run tests, data collection, analysis, and reporting
Description and Responsibilities
The candidate will be responsible for designing, characterizing, integrating, and validating bedrock autonomy hardware.
  • Help define system and component level HW architecture for autonomous machines
  • Establish and lead relationships and programs with external vendors to deliver critical components and systems for our autonomous HW platforms
  • Work with safety team to establish requirements and performance metrics for components and systems
  • Write reusable, high quality, sensor data analysis and test automation software (Python and/or C++/C/Rust)
Education and Experience
  • 6+ years of professional relevant industry experience as hardware engineer or related technical role
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or related technical field
  • Strong fundamentals in HW engineering
  • Understanding and knowledge of physical processes by which a sensor operates
  • Hands on experience with characterization of autonomy sensors like lidar, radar, and cameras
Ways to Stand Out From the Field
  • Deep experience in any of these areas:
    • Camera and optics design and performance
    • Camera imaging pipeline including sensor options, ISP tuning, compression, and storage
