Job description

Job Description SummaryOrganization's Summary Statement:
The University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (IHC) merges the computational expertise, clinical expertise, biomedical innovation, health data and academic resources of the University of Maryland, College Park; the University of Maryland, Baltimore; and the University of Maryland Medical System to innovate health care delivery and support the Montgomery County life science community.
Job Summary:
We are building next-generation intelligent, immersive, high-performance tools for healthcare, and are looking for a highly motivated, performance-oriented software engineer to own the full development stack. This position requires passion for real-time XR programming on cutting-edge hardware while closely integrating AI/ML for neural rendering, generative medical visualization, real-time inference, and data-driven enhancements. Expect to do deep dives in C++/C#/Python coding, low-latency optimizations, GPU expertise, and developing massively parallel software to run on IHC's state-of-the-art supercomputer, while shipping production-grade immersive applications that transform surgical planning, training, clinical workflows, and diagnostics.
This is a builder-first role with over 80% time devoted to hands-on coding, software architecture, optimization, deployment, and iteration in a fast-moving, interdisciplinary environment. This position involves mentoring junior talent, maintaining mission-critical infrastructure, and collaborating with computer scientists and clinicians to build and deploy visual computing tools to revolutionize healthcare. This position is in a supportive, mission-driven, research-lab environment with mentorship from senior scientists, engineers, researchers, and professors, access to top-tier hardware, and opportunities for rapid professional development while contributing to health computing. This position is fully onsite and requires presence at the IHC office in North Bethesda.
Responsibilities/Duties:
Hands-on architect, developer, and optimizer: Architect, code, profile, and ship high-performance XR + AI visualization systems - including real-time neural rendering (Gaussian splatting, NeRF variants), AI-enhanced volume rendering, generative modeling, multi-modal data fusion, Unity/Unreal pipelines, and edge-deployed inferencing. Own end-to-end implementation from prototype to polished product, targeting 90+ FPS on XR hardware.
Infrastructure and platform engineering: Design, scale, and harden the institute's advanced XR + GPU-accelerated ML compute ecosystem for real-time visual computing pipelines, cross-platform deployment, and performance tooling.
Mentor, Accelerate, Learn, and Collaborate: Work closely with senior team members, contribute to code reviews, mentor undergrads as you level up in modern XR + AI workflows. Hands-on experiential teaching of specialized classes, and more informal hands-on instruction for faculty/users at IHC.
High-impact flex work on emerging priorities, keeping pace with
Minimum Qualification:
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
Experience: Strong academic record with relevant coursework in real-time graphics, computer vision, XR development, or AI-integrated systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Foundational AI/ML knowledge: PyTorch/TensorFlow basics, computer vision/graphics concepts.
Solid C++ proficiency (performance-oriented coding) with working knowledge of C#.
Comfortable Python usage for ML prototyping, scripting, data handling, and rapid experimentation.
Familiarity with Windows, Linux, macOS, and mobile platforms.
Strong communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Excellent problem-solver who enjoys debugging, profiling, troubleshooting, and making programs
run smoothly.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently when needed.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
Genuine excitement to code interactive, intelligent, and immersive tools that advance healthcare.
Preferences:
Master's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
Experience with AR/VR/XR devices.
Understanding of modern graphics APIs (Vulkan preferred, DirectX 12, Metal, or OpenGL) with real-time rendering experience.
Basic GPU optimization awareness, CUDA, compute shaders.
Hands-on experience building XR prototypes/apps in Unity3D and/or Unreal Engine
Familiarity with 3D capture/reconstruction (multi-camera, light fields, SLAM) + ML preprocessing.
