Job Summary
The Coder I provides duties include reviewing physician documentation as appropriate to extract data and accurately assign proper CPT and ICD-10-CM codes for billing. The coder I performs duties assigned that include excellent communication, accurate medical coding and data entry, and all essential duties of the department as required by the department director.
Shift: Day M-F w/flexibility to meet month end and/or quarterly deadlines.
This position plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Health's mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative, patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities.
Essential Job Duties
  • Accurately assign appropriate E/M level for all professional fee services within accordance of the CPT and CMS guidelines
  • Accurately assign appropriate diagnosis codes
  • Understand and maintain education on all CPT/ICD-10/HCPCS guidelines, to include revisions, deletions, additions
  • Make necessary changes to claims to ensure accurate billing regarding issues such as modifiers, place of service, proper code selection, and payer specific guidelines
  • Communicate effectively with providers/office manager/auditors/billing department to ensure the highest level of service is being captured
  • Review providers dictation for office and procedural visits
  • Provide technical guidance to physicians and other department staff to include identifying and correcting errors, such as incomplete or missing documentation, instruction on proper code usage in accordance to guidelines, and maintaining an open line of communication at all times.
