The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Contributes to computational physics research. Supports simulation design and execution, data analysis, visualization, documentation, and presentation of results for research involving high-energy-density physics, inertial confinement fusion, and large-scale Multiphysics modeling. Contributes to verification and validation of charged-particle transport capabilities in simulation codes used for ignition-relevant applications. Interfaces with experimental and computational colleagues, providing opportunities to understand how simulations support experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with the design, execution, documentation, and analysis of computational test problems used to assess charged-particle transport capabilities in large-scale Multiphysics simulation codes.
  • Contributes to verification and validation studies for computational physics models relevant to high-energy-density physics, inertial confinement fusion, and ignition applications.
  • Supports model development, simulation workflow development, post-processing, data analysis, visualization, and interpretation of computational results.
  • Interfaces with experimental, theoretical, and computational colleagues to understand how simulations support experimental design, diagnostic interpretation, and analysis of high-energy-density physics experiments.
  • Applies scientific programming tools, including Python and related languages, to prepare input files, analyze simulation outputs, generate plots, automate workflows, and present results.
  • Works with existing multiphysics hydrodynamics and radiation-hydrodynamics codes, including simulation setup, execution, data management, and comparison of results with benchmark calculations, analytic expectations, or other reference solutions.
  • Prepares technical summaries, figures, reports, and presentations for use and interpretation by scientists, students, code developers, and external collaborators.
  • Participates in research discussions and communicates computational findings within department and the wider scientific community.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, astronomy, or a closely related quantitative field required.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience or coursework in computational physics, numerical methods, applied mathematics, scientific computing, algorithms, fluid dynamics, plasma physics, or related areas required
  • Experience with scientific programming using Python or related tools required
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze scientific or computational data, prepare visualizations, interpret results, and communicate findings required
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment required
  • Working knowledge of Fortran, C/C++, Linux/Unix environments, Git, high-performance computing systems, multiphysics simulation, hydrodynamics, radiation-hydrodynamics, transport modeling, or high-energy-density physics required
