Description

Legal Aid of Western Missouri's Neighborhood Development (LAND) Office is seeking a litigation paralegal to assist our team in representing nonprofit and community organizations working to improve their neighborhoods. The team brings lawsuits on behalf of community groups to gain control of vacant, run-down homes or compel owners to repair them, helps neighborhoods navigate zoning disputes, and partners with City Codes Enforcement and other city initiatives, like the Green Impact Zone, to address problem properties.  


In this role, you'll support attorneys on property research, case preparation, and community outreach in some of Kansas City's most impactful neighborhood work. 


Key Responsibilities  

Perform all responsibilities required to assist attorneys in the completion of cases or assignments, including: 

  • Screen and interview clients, including representatives of neighborhood associations and community organizations. 
  • Implement procedures to maintain adequate legal records. 
  • Assist attorneys with research and preparation of legal documents, including pleadings in abandoned housing and property-related litigation. 
  • Perform property title research, property code violation research, and property tax research. 
  • Perform inspection, investigation, and discovery under attorney supervision in preparation for trial, including site visits to document property conditions. 
  • Perform outreach to neighborhood groups and community partners. 
  • Administer special programs providing advocacy training or services to community organizations, as allowed by law. 
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.  

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, associate's degree, or certificate program in paralegal studies 
  • Knowledge of legal terminology, principles, and practices and legal research techniques 
  • Familiar with local, state and federal laws and regulations 
  • Relevant computer software knowledge and experience 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with staff attorneys and collaborate with support staff 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with real estate transactions or property title issues 
  • Experience in a legal, nonprofit, or social services setting 
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills, particularly Spanish 
  • Familiarity with case management systems or legal technology platforms 

Location

This role is an in-person role based in Legal Aid's LAND Office located on The Paseo Boulevard. Regular in-office attendance is the expectation for this role. Legal Aid offers flexible work arrangements to support employees in maintaining schedules that enable them to perform at their best.  


Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $51,750 - $68,310 on Legal Aid's formal salary scale. Placement on the range will be based on factors such as years of relevant experience, budget, and internal equity. Employees who demonstrate fluency in a second language are eligible for an annual salary supplement of $3,600.
