Computer Admin information

How much does a computer administrator make?

Computer administrators typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000, though this can vary based on experience, certifications, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced administrators with specialized skills or certifications can earn over $100,000 annually.

What does a computer administrator do?

A computer administrator manages and maintains an organization's computer systems, including servers, networks, and user accounts. They install, update, and troubleshoot hardware and software, ensure security protocols are followed, and often use tools like network monitoring software. Strong technical skills and certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Microsoft Certified are common requirements.

Will sysadmin be replaced by AI?

Computer administrators, or sysadmins, perform tasks such as managing networks, servers, and security systems. While AI and automation tools can handle routine tasks, sysadmins are still needed for complex problem-solving, system design, and oversight, making complete replacement unlikely in the near future.

Is sysadmin a stressful job?

System administrators often work in high-pressure environments that require quick problem-solving and on-call availability, which can lead to stress. The job involves managing critical systems, handling emergencies, and maintaining security, making it potentially demanding but also rewarding for those with strong technical skills. Stress levels vary depending on the organization, workload, and experience.

Summary

We are seeking a highly technical, execution-focused Hardware & Software Engineering Applications System Administrator to support the core engineering applications environment for the Hardware Platform Solutions (HPS) group. The System Administrator is responsible for the direct operational and technical execution of the daily installation, packaging, configuration, and troubleshooting of specialized R&D application toolchains.

The successful candidate will provide disciplined operational support across 12 global Design Centers to eliminate engineering environment blocks and optimize developer productivity. This role requires an agile approach to manage the rapid iteration and specialized tools necessary for high-performance product development, directly executing provisioning workflows that accelerate engineering velocity and eliminate onboarding productivity gaps.

Core Responsibilities

1. Hands-on Application Operations & New Hire Enablement

  • Execute Onboarding Provisioning: Implement and run automated application provisioning playbooks to eliminate the traditional "Day 1 productivity gap," ensuring new software and hardware engineers are immediately equipped with specialized toolsets.
  • Technical Tool Maintenance: Manage the daily installation, configuration, application packaging, and technical integration of specialized R&D software across physical lab systems and cloud-based engineering workstations.
  • Day-to-Day Engineering Support: Serve as the direct, hands-on technical bridge between corporate IT infrastructure and engineering teams, resolving environment blocks and optimizing execution workflows.

2. Hardware Engineering Toolchain & License Administration

  • EDA and CAD Deployment: Execute application packaging, license tracking, and configuration management for the multi-disciplinary HPS hardware engineering application environment.
  • Hands-on Toolchain Maintenance: Provide direct administrative and technical troubleshooting support for specialized hardware engineering environments, ensuring high availability for the following application suites:
    • Mechanical & Thermal: PTC Creo, Windchill PLM/Reliability, SolidWorks, Simcenter FloTHERM, and Cadence Celsius EC.
    • Electrical & Power: Cadence OrCAD Capture, ConceptHDL, Synopsys HSPICE, and Ansys Electronics.
    • Signal/Power Integrity (SI/PI): Cadence Sigrity, Agilent ADS, HyperLynx, and Keysight SystemVue.
    • PCBA Layout & Logic/FPGA: Cadence Allegro PCB Designer, Altium, Valor NPI, Siemens QuestaSim, AMD Vivado, Altera Quartus, and Lattice Diamond.
    • Optics & Photonics: COMSOL, Lumerical, Optiwave, VPIphotonics, and Zemax.
  • License Server Operations: Administer and monitor central concurrent-user license managers, handling license queuing configurations and multi-tenant tracking utilities.

3. Software Engineering, DevOps, & Lab Test Support

  • ALM & DevOps Support: Provide direct operational support for application lifecycle management (ALM), source control, and container platforms utilizing Azure DevOps, Jira Cloud Enterprise, Confluence Cloud Premium, Git, GitKraken, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Firmware & Secure Development Lifecycle: Administer specialized secure code compilation and vulnerability environments, handling AMI BIOS/BMC source code toolchains, Green Hills MULTI compilers, Black Duck, Coverity, Opswat MetaDefender, and Defensics.
  • Validation & Lab Synchronization: Manage the local deployment, active licensing, and update synchronization for specialized validation and lab testing software, including Ixia (IxNetwork), Spirent Test Center, Wireshark, LabVIEW, TestStand, and hardware debugger IDEs (SEGGER J-Link, TI Code Composer, ARM Keil).
Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

Required Technical Skills

  • Hands-on Engineering Tool Competency: Direct technical experience installing, patching, configuring, and deploying major EDA/CAD suites (such as Cadence, Synopsys, Ansys, or PTC).
  • DevOps & Infrastructure Skills: Practical administrative experience managing Azure DevOps, Jira, Git repositories, CI/CD pipelines, and containerization systems (Docker/Kubernetes).
  • License Architecture Knowledge: Functional knowledge of working with FlexLM, RMS, and similar vendor-specific license management server environments.
  • Cross-Platform OS Familiarity: Technical comfort supporting Windows desktop applications alongside non-standard Linux base development images (Ubuntu, Rocky Linux) and enterprise endpoint configurations (BigFix, ThreatLocker).

Strongly Preferred Certifications

  • CompTIA Linux+, Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate
  • Azure DevOps Engineer Expert or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional
  • Certified Jira System Administrator

Soft Skills & Working Style

  • Detailed Documentation: Proven ability to generate flawless application installation playbooks, precise packaging documentation, and clear troubleshooting scripts.
  • Tactical Problem Solver: Exceptional technical troubleshooting skills, capable of identifying workarounds and diagnosing complex engineering application bugs within highly secure enterprise environments.
  • Cross-functional Partner: Strong communication skills to interact directly and efficiently with HPS Design Center engineers, project managers, and global infrastructure tier-3 teams.
  • Resource Optimization: Highly organized approach to tracking local software licensing utilization, preventing downtime, and advising management on upcoming software capacity or maintenance renewals.
Physical Demands
  • Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.
  • Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data. Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise IT system administration or application engineering, with at least 2+ years explicitly focused on supporting an active R&D engineering team.
