Position Information
Position Title Part-Time Instructor - CompTIA A+ Certification (V15 Core 1 and V15 Core 2) Campus Elizabeth Department Industry-Business Institute Full-time, Part-time, Adjunct Part Time Exempt or Non-Exempt Non-Exempt Regular,Temporary, or Grant Regular General Description
The Continuing Education & Workforce Development Department seeks a part-time instructor for our CompTIA A+ Certification program. We are looking for an engaging, tech-savvy professional to teach adult learners, entrepreneurs, career changers, and job seekers through a blend of in-person sessions and on-demand online modules. You will facilitate learning, monitor progress, and prepare students to pass both the official CompTIA A+ V15 Core 1 and V15 Core 2 exams.
Please note that this course covers the practical operational functionality, troubleshooting procedures, and configuration setups tested on the exams; theoretical computer science mathematics or abstract engineering principles are not part of the curriculum. Under Core 1, the curriculum focuses on mobile devices, networking technology, hardware components, virtualization, cloud computing, and network troubleshooting. Core 2 topics expand into installing and configuring operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS), expanded security parameters, software troubleshooting, and operational procedures. Additionally, the curriculum guides students through standard help desk ticket resolution, malware remediation, and security script basics.
Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities
Provide CompTIA A+ instruction to students utilizing the established curriculum provided by UCNJ Union College, of Union County, NJ for both the Core 1 and Core 2 Certification Programs.
Teach material strictly from the approved curriculum, following predefined course outlines and delivering a clear, comprehensive syllabus focused solely on hardware/software functionality and troubleshooting workflows.
Conduct lectures and practical training explicitly aligned with navigating command-line interfaces, physical hardware assemblies, and passing the official CompTIA A+ certification exams.
Provide quality, technically relevant instruction, assessment, and feedback in both lecture and laboratory settings, utilizing real-world simulations, hands-on exercise labs, and project workbooks.
Instruct or co-instruct courses for non-credit programs across traditional lecture, hybrid, and fully online formats, with the ability to teach remote live and support asynchronous on-demand modules.
Monitor student performance on targeted pre-and post-assessments, motivate active participation, and provide constructive feedback to ensure course standards and technical fluency objectives are met.
Guide students through core and advanced IT workflows, moving seamlessly from basic computer component assembly to advanced network configuration, malware removal, and security policy management.
Maintain meticulous and compliant institutional records, including daily attendance tracking, midterm reporting, and final grade entries.
Assist with ongoing course and program evaluations to ensure the curriculum continuously prepares students for the official testing windows.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a related field or advanced certification from a four-year college or university in the relevant industry/discipline is required.
Official, current CompTIA A+ Certification (covering both Core 1 and Core 2 domains) preferred.
Experience
Requires a minimum of three (3) or more years of formal teaching experience, preferably instructing adult learners in vocational or non-credit continuing education environments.
A minimum of five (5) years of practical, hands-on experience in desktop support, network administration, systems troubleshooting, or corporate help desk engineering roles.
Advanced, demonstrable technical proficiency in PC hardware customization, network router configuration, enterprise malware removal tools, and navigating active directory environments.
Proven track record in adult education, workforce development, corporate training, or vocational instruction.
Official, active CompTIA A+ certification is required. Higher-level certifications (such as CompTIA Network+, Security+, or Cisco CCNA) are highly preferred.
Exceptional communication skills with a proven ability to translate complex networking topologies, Command Prompt syntax, and hardware configurations into clear, actionable lessons.
Deep conceptual understanding that the instructional mandate is strictly focused on device management, configuration workflows, and physical diagnostics rather than theoretical computing architecture.
Practical familiarity with managing course shells within Learning Management Systems (specifically Canvas) and coordinating student activities inside simulated digital laboratory environments (e.g., CompTIA CertMaster Labs).
Competencies and Skills Required
Skill in delivering complex technical material strictly according to predefined course outlines, institutional syllabi, and mandatory certification topics, focusing explicitly on applied technical functionality over abstract computer science theories.
Ability to multi-task in a busy academic environment and effectively pace hardware simulations, live diagnostics, and lectures to ensure full classroom testing readiness within an accelerated curriculum window.
Curious educator utilizing innovative educational methodologies with the ability to quickly master new program curricula and digital learning management platforms.
Strong interpersonal skills to assist leadership with ongoing course evaluations and program improvements.
Ability to teach face-to-face, hybrid, and online classrooms using remote-live tools, virtual hands-on exercise labs, video-based lessons, and learning management systems (LMS).
Skill in evaluating student work via pre-and post-assessments, providing actionable feedback, answering hardware or software configuration inquiries promptly, and motivating active classroom participation.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
This position's duties are normally performed in a typical work environment, based on the activity scheduled.
Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
