Job description

A Complex Care Assistant (CCA) is a paraprofessional who is specifically trained and performs assigned functions of personal and enhanced care services in the residence under the direction, instruction, and supervision of the Nursing Supervisor. This role will report to the Director of Nursing/Nursing Supervisor/RN.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Provides personal care and related services, as well as enhanced care services, in the home, under the direction, instruction, and supervision of the Nursing Supervisor permitted under State Law

  • Tasks to be performed by a CCA must be assigned by, and performed under the supervision of an RN, who will be responsible for the patient care provided by the CCA

  • Follows the Plan of Care to provide safe, competent care to the client

  • The Complex Care Assistant can perform Personal Care Services, which can include the following:

    • Assist clients with ADL's

    • Assist the patient with ambulation

    • Assist therapy personnel as needed with rehabilitative processes.

    • Perform routine housekeeping tasks

  • Complex Care Assistants can also perform Enhanced Care Services that do not require the skills, judgment, or assessment of a nurse. These services include:

    • Enteral G-tube/J-tube feedings

    • Skin care including application of OTC products or routine G-tube/J-tube care

    • Oxygen therapy

    • Oral (dental) suction to remove superficial oral secretions

    • Ostomy and catheter care

    • Modified meal preparation

    • Braces, splints, and/or pressure stockings

    • Equipment management and maintenance (wheelchair, CPAP/BiPAP, oxygen and Respiratory care equipment) and paperwork

    • Transportation to medical providers / pharmacy

  • Reports on incomplete work assignments to Nursing Supervisor

  • Reports any variance, accident, or unusual occurrence to the appropriate personnel

  • Carries out, reports and documents care given in an effective timely manner

  • Complete the required training and/or competency evaluation for Complex Care Assistants, as well as meet all supervision requirements

  • Complete any additional requirements of the CSN agency and follow all agency requirements regarding documentation, onboarding, employment, etc.

  • Complex Care Assistants may only provide services to members they have been specifically trained to care for

Required Skills/Abilities/Knowledge:
  • Not be on the List of Excluded Individuals and Entities as provided by the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or other applicable lists excluding individuals or entities from participating in MassHealth under state or federal law

  • Ability to carry out directions, read and write

  • Complete training requirements for Complex Care Assistant services

  • Must be free from health problems that may be injurious to patient, self, and co-workers and must present appropriate evidence to substantiate this


Education/Experience/Licenses/Certifications:
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Must have current CPR certification

  • Personal Care Services, Training and Competency Requirements - The Assistant must meet the training and competency evaluation program standards for home health aides, established at 42 CFR 484.80

  • Enhanced Care Services, Training and Competency Requirements - The assistant must demonstrate prociency in safely providing the enhanced care services specic to the complex care members' needs


Job Conditions/Physical Requirements:
  • The ability to drive and the ability to access clients' homes, which may not be routinely wheelchair accessible, are required

  • Hearing, eyesight, and physical dexterity must be sufficient to perform a physical assessment of the client's condition and to perform client care

  • On occasion, it may be required to bend, stop, reach, and move client; lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds
