What is a competitive account executive?

A Competitive Account Executive is a sales professional responsible for identifying, pursuing, and closing sales opportunities in markets where their company faces strong competition. Their main focus is on winning over clients from competitors by demonstrating the superior value or features of their own products or services. They often engage in strategic selling, tailored presentations, and negotiation to persuade prospects to switch providers. Strong knowledge of the market, competitors, and customer needs is crucial for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a competitive account executive?

To thrive as a Competitive Account Executive, you need strong sales acumen, deep product knowledge, and a proven track record of meeting or exceeding quotas, often supported by a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, data analytics tools, and sales enablement software is typically required. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are vital for identifying customer needs, closing deals, and maintaining a competitive edge in fast-paced sales environments.

How does a competitive account executive typically collaborate with other departments to achieve sales goals?

A Competitive Account Executive works closely with marketing, customer success, and product teams to understand customer needs, tailor solutions, and ensure a seamless buying experience. Summary/Objectives

Velocity1 is a startup technology company built inside RJ Young, a 70+ year-old, $200M organization. We were created to move faster and focus exclusively on cutting-edge technology solutions including cybersecurity, managed IT, cloud, and modern software.

We combine the energy and ambition of a startup with the backing, scale, and trust of an established market leader. Velocity1 exists to help organizations stay ahead of what’s next, without the baggage of legacy thinking.

We’re on the hunt for competitive, curious, and coachable individuals who want to start their sales career on a winning team. As an Associate Account Executive (AAE), you'll be the engine behind our outbound pipeline—identifying, connecting with, and setting high-quality meetings for our Account Executives with potential customers across SMB, Mid-Market, and Enterprise accounts.

  • Drive outbound prospecting campaigns via phone, email, and LinkedIn to generate net new meetings
  • Set monthly goals of 40 total meetings (segmented by account size)
    • 20 with SMBs (under 500 employees)
    • 15 with Mid-Market (500–2,000 employees)
    • 5 with Enterprise (2,000+ employees or 10,000+ students)
  • Qualify prospects and schedule high-impact sales meetings for the AE team
  • Maintain CRM hygiene and clear documentation of all outreach
  • Partner with marketing and sales leadership to optimize messaging and targeting
  • Learn the ropes of the sales process and shadow AEs to prep for your next step
