General Description
The Spanish Translation Consultant provides professional translation services in support of the Pioneer, OCCC's award-winning student newspaper, with a 50-year history of publication. Reporting to the Pioneer Faculty Advisor, this remote contract position collaborates with student journalists to review, refine, and produce accurate, publication-quality Spanish translations of news and feature content. The consultant serves as both a translator and mentor, providing guidance and feedback that helps students strengthen their written Spanish language and translation skills while ensuring high editorial standards for bilingual publication.

Minimum Education/Experience
Minimum two (2) years of full time or regular contract work as a professional Spanish-language translator
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge:
Professional translation principles, practices, and ethics
Advanced Spanish grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary
English grammar, style, and journalistic writing conventions
Cultural and regional language differences within Spanish-speaking communities
Editorial and proofreading techniques to ensure accuracy, consistency, and readability
Skills:
Exceptional written translation skills with the ability to accurately translate complex written materials from English to Spanish while preserving meaning, tone, style, and intent
Strong editing and proofreading skills with exceptional attention to detail
Identifying and resolving linguistic, grammatical, and contextual translation issues
Providing constructive feedback and coaching to student writers and translators
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Organizing and prioritizing multiple assignments while meeting publication deadlines
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Google Workspace, and document collaboration tools
Abilities:
To produce publication-quality translations with a high degree of accuracy and consistency
Collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and student journalists
Explain translation choices and language nuances in a clear and educational manner
Maintain the editorial voice and intent of original content while adapting it appropriately for Spanish-speaking audiences
Work independently with minimal supervision while managing competing priorities
Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment
Foster a supportive learning environment by mentoring students and encouraging continuous improvement in Spanish writing and translation skills
Adapt to changing publication schedules and editorial priorities
Physical Demands/Working Conditions
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is sedentary work which requires the person in this position to occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to grasp, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

The person hired is required to work in the state of Oklahoma.

Required Training
Quarterly compliance training as assigned by institution.
Work Hours
This is a remote, temporary contract position. Work is performed on an as-needed basis, with an anticipated average workload of approximately 10 hours per week. Actual hours may vary depending on publication schedules, project volume, and business needs.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)
Translate news articles, feature stories, editorials, and other written content from English to Spanish while preserving the original meaning, tone, style, and journalistic integrity.
Review, edit, and refine student-generated Spanish translations to ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency, grammar, and cultural appropriateness prior to publication.
Collaborate with the Pioneer Faculty Advisor and student journalists to clarify content, terminology, and context to produce high-quality bilingual publications.
Provide constructive feedback and mentoring to student journalists to strengthen their Spanish writing, editing, and translation skills.
Ensure translated content adheres to established editorial standards, publication deadlines, and style guidelines.
Proofread translated materials for grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and consistency before publication.
Research terminology and subject matter as needed to ensure accurate and contextually appropriate translations.
Recommend revisions that improve readability while maintaining the intent and voice of the original author.
Maintain consistency in terminology and style across all translated publications.
Communicate professionally and promptly with the Faculty Advisor regarding project status, questions, and deadlines.
Maintain confidentiality of unpublished materials, student work, and other sensitive information.
Complete assigned translation projects within established timelines while maintaining a high level of quality and accuracy.
Participate in virtual meetings with the Faculty Advisor and student editorial staff as requested.
Perform other translation-related services within the scope of the contract as assigned.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
