Job description

Position Summary
The Plant Engineer maintains and improves the facility infrastructure and utility systems that enable safe, reliable, 24/7 radioisotope production operations at Nusano's West Valley City production facility. This position works alongside Plant MRO leadership to ensure continuous plant engineering coverage, independent decision-making, and on-call response capabilities across all building and utility systems. The Plant Engineer executes preventive and corrective maintenance, leads troubleshooting and root cause analysis, manages vendor and contractor activities, and drives continuous improvements in facility reliability, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do
Facility Operations & Maintenance
  • Operate, maintain, and monitor critical facility utility systems, including process cooling water (PCW), HVAC, humidification, compressed air, electrical distribution, and building mechanical systems.
  • Execute preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on plant infrastructure and equipment in accordance with SOPs, manufacturer specifications, and safety requirements.
  • Complete work orders accurately and on time in IBM Maximo, including documentation of labor, materials, findings, and corrective actions. Maintain MRO inventory records and stock levels for plant systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections of facility infrastructure, building systems, safety routes, and grounds; identify abnormal or unsafe conditions and initiate corrective actions.
  • Respond to facility emergencies using standard operating procedures and emergency operating procedures and provide 24/7 on-call engineering coverage on a rotating basis.
Troubleshooting & Engineering
  • Troubleshoot facility system faults using structured diagnostic methods; evaluate findings, perform root cause analyses, and drive corrective actions to closure.
  • Evaluate system performance and recommend upgrades to improve the reliability, efficiency, energy performance, and maintainability of plant infrastructure.
  • Support capital project execution, from scope definition through commissioning, for facility upgrades, expansions, and new utility installations.
  • Monitor and optimize building automation systems (BAS) to maintain the environmental conditions required for production areas, laboratories, and clean spaces.
Vendor & Contractor Coordination
  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure work complies with site procedures, standards, and safety requirements. Schedule and oversee vendor and subcontractor activities during maintenance and service.
  • Manage service contracts for critical plant systems, such as chillers, HVAC, and electrical systems, and evaluate contractor performance against agreed-upon standards.
  • Order parts and supplies for plant maintenance and repairs and manage procurement timelines to minimize equipment downtime.
Compliance & Continuous Improvement
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and EPA requirements, local building and mechanical codes, and Nusano safety requirements for all facility systems.
  • Partner with EHSS to support hazard identification, incident reporting, and safe work practices across Plant MRO activities.
  • Analyze the root causes of facility system downtime; recommend and implement safety enhancements, process improvements, and equipment design upgrades to improve plant reliability.
  • Maintain comprehensive facility documentation, including system diagrams, maintenance records, inspection reports, and compliance records.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Three or more years of experience in plant engineering, facility engineering, or maintenance engineering in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting experience with HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and/or process utility systems.
  • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for work order execution and asset management.
  • Ability to provide 24/7 on-call coverage on a rotating basis to support continuous production operations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a regulated manufacturing environment, such as GMP, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, or nuclear.
  • Experience with IBM Maximo or similar EAM/CMMS platforms.
  • Experience with building automation systems (BAS), process cooling water systems, or clean utility systems.
  • Familiarity with the commissioning and qualification of building and utility systems.
  • Relevant certifications, such as CMRP, OSHA 30, PMP, or a professional engineering license.
  • High Purity Water experience.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work at heights, use ladders, and enter confined spaces.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Ability to work comfortably in environments with industrial hazards while using appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Must be comfortable working within radiation environment and or cGMP
  • Work in this environment may involve exposure to hazardous materials and conditions, including high voltage, strong magnetic fields, chemicals, cryogenic substances, and radiological sources. These hazards require specialized training, strict adherence to safety procedures, and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
