The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!
Description of Work
Reporting to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager II this position is responsible for providing first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I's in a minimum custody security facility. Job responsibilities include; but are not limited to, the following:
- Assigning lower level custody staff to a particular area or post.
- Overseeing officer activities and performance, and ensuring that the custody, security and welfare of offenders are maintained.
- Assigning work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Range: $37,377.00 - $65,408.00

  • Knowledge of Facility Operations.
  • Knowledge of Prisons' Policy and Procedures.

Necessary Special Qualifications: May require General Instructor Certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is NC07. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.
About the Division of Institutions:
The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.

Tabor Correctional Institution is located in Tabor City, North Carolina and houses up to 1,752 male offenders in a close, medium, and minimum custody facility.
