As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for commission optician in the United States is $19.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.59 and $21.39 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Do Target optical employees make commissions?

Target optical employees, including opticians, typically do not earn commissions but may receive hourly wages and bonuses based on performance. Compensation structures can vary by location and store policies, with some roles focusing on customer service rather than sales commissions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Commission Optician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commission Optician, you need a solid understanding of optics, eyewear products, and prescription interpretation, typically supported by state licensure or certification. Familiarity with lens edging equipment, optical sales software, and insurance billing systems is also important. Excellent interpersonal skills, salesmanship, and attention to detail help build customer trust and drive sales performance. These competencies ensure accurate dispensing of eyewear, customer satisfaction, and achievement of sales targets in a competitive retail environment.

Do opticians get a commission?

Commission opticians earn a percentage of the sales they generate, often in addition to an hourly wage or salary. This incentive encourages them to promote specific products like glasses and contact lenses, and commission structures vary by employer and location. Many opticians also focus on customer service and technical skills, such as fitting and adjusting eyewear.

What company pays opticians the most?

Commission opticians' pay varies by employer, location, and experience, but some of the highest-paying companies include large retail chains and specialized optical practices. Opticians working in high-income areas or with advanced certifications tend to earn more, especially when commissions and bonuses are included. Overall, independent optical shops and luxury retail brands often offer higher compensation packages for experienced opticians.

How much money do opticians get paid?

Opticians typically earn a median annual salary of around $37,000 to $40,000, with wages varying based on experience, location, and certification. Licensed or specialized opticians may earn higher salaries, and those working in retail or healthcare settings often have different pay scales.

What are the typical challenges a Commission Optician might face in balancing sales targets with patient care?

As a Commission Optician, you'll often navigate the dual responsibilities of meeting sales goals while ensuring that each customer receives personalized, ethical eye care. This can require careful listening to customers' needs, educating them on product options without upselling unnecessarily, and managing time effectively during busy periods. Striking the right balance helps build trust and long-term client relationships while still achieving your sales objectives. Support from your team and regular training can help you stay up-to-date with products and refine your approach.

What is a Commission Optician?

A Commission Optician is a professional who assists customers in selecting and fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses, typically working in retail optical stores. They earn a base salary plus commission based on the number or value of sales made, which incentivizes them to provide excellent customer service and product recommendations. Commission Opticians must be knowledgeable about lens options, frame styles, and vision insurance while also meeting sales targets set by their employers.
