Automation Engineer

Automation Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to design, program, integrate, and commission industrial automation and robotic systems. The role focuses on developing robust machine control and robot cell solutions, executing FAT/SAT activities, and supporting field commissioning with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and commission PLC, HMI, and robotic systems for production equipment and assembly cells.
  • Develop robot programs and cell layouts using RobotStudio and manufacturer-specific programming tools for Fanuc, KUKA, ABB, and Yaskawa robots.
  • Lead Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT); create test plans, execute tests, and document results and corrective actions.
  • Integrate communication networks and fieldbuses such as Ethernet/IP and Profinet between controllers, I/O, and supervisory systems.
  • Create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and bill of materials in collaboration with electrical designers and field technicians.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve control and robot-related issues during commissioning and production ramp-up, including PLC logic, I/O faults, and network problems.
  • Work closely with project managers, mechanical engineers, and customers to define requirements, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Implement safety systems and ensure compliance with applicable standards (e.g., machine guarding, safety interlocks, ISO/ANSI robotic safety guidelines).
  • Provide on-site commissioning support, operator training, and handover documentation, including manuals and as-built drawings.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize machine cycle time, reliability, and maintainability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Control Systems, Robotics, or related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 3+ years of experience designing, programming, and commissioning industrial automation systems and robot cells.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial robots and controllers from Fanuc, KUKA, ABB, and Yaskawa; ability to develop and debug robot programs.
  • Experience with RobotStudio or equivalent robot simulation/offline programming tools.
  • Proven experience planning and executing FAT and SAT activities with clear documentation and test evidence.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial networking and fieldbuses, including Ethernet/IP and Profinet.
  • Skilled in PLC programming (e.g., Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens) and HMI configuration.
  • Ability to read and create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control system documentation.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and implementing safety-rated hardware and interlocks for robotic applications.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills, with experience working on cross-functional project teams.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites for commissioning and support; valid drivers license.
