About the Position
We're looking for an experienced Senior Data Center Engineer to design, build, scale, and perform daily upkeep in our regional data center. This is a hands-on position that will require a strong communicator with excellent people skills who can manage projects and take ownership.
You will join an interdisciplinary team made up of several groups across Jane Street, including our Network, Server, Facilities Engineering, Research, and Trading teams, along with some external data center operators, third-party contractors, and cabling, hardware, and telco vendors. You will collaborate with these stakeholders to:
  • Design plans for new equipment deployments
  • Coordinate logistical tasks with internal teams and third-party providers
  • Install, cable, configure, and troubleshoot different types of network and server equipment
  • Install and configure server OS in a PXE environment
  • Install and configure network equipment in a ZTP environment
  • Ensure our data center upholds the highest standards in terms of security, organization, documentation, safety, cleanliness, and supply management

You'll join our Data Center team in Chicago, liaising daily with our New York counterparts. You'll maintain strategic oversight of power, cooling, network, and compute infrastructure, and lead all incident investigations and projects. This role offers a challenging environment where you'll constantly use cutting-edge technologies and learn from the top engineers in the industry. Due to the nature of the job, remote work is not an option.
About You
  • Have 5+ years of experience working in a data center environment and a strong knowledge of data center best practices and cabling methodology
  • Self-starter; motivated to work independently and improve processes where possible
  • Thrive in a fast-paced setting that demands continuous learning and adaptation to new technologies
  • Knowledgeable in networking fundamentals; can address Layer 2 and 3 connectivity issues
  • Proficient in a Linux environment (Scripting skills in Bash or Python are a plus)
  • Experienced with a variety of network and server hardware
  • Experienced with installing, configuring, and maintaining GPU hardware within data center environments
  • Able to design, deploy, test, and troubleshoot both copper and fiber cabling
  • Experienced in working with liquid cooling systems
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders for equipment installation
  • Skilled in planning and coordinating work between various parties
  • Having an ability to manage a site and mentor less experienced technicians is a plus
