General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled technical work coordinating the preparation, review and design of engineering drawings and property identification maps using manual and computer aided systems, performing technical tasks related to traffic data collection, performing field work for engineering purposes, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Staff Engineer or Engineering Director.


Qualification Requirements

Essential Functions

Prepares plans, drawings and sketches using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software.

Reviews construction drawings, site plans, utility plans, preliminary and final plats for commercial, public use and residential developments to ensure compliance with Federal, State, regional and local regulations.

Prepares or corrects drawings and maps from field notes, construction plans, property records, deeds and other instruments.

Sets traffic counters for data collection purposes; downloads or retrieves traffic data, reviews for potential errors, prepares and maintains records of collected traffic data.

Responds to complaints, as assigned by supervisors. Reports findings in verbal and written format.

Performs inspections of construction sites to ensure compliance with project plans, county standards, permit requirements, and contract specifications

Participates in special projects; creates unique or specialized displays, models and presentations.

Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent customer service.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of construction and/or civil engineering design and construction principles, practices and techniques; general knowledge of engineering and business mathematics, surveying and drafting; thorough knowledge of CAD operation; general knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment; general knowledge of County ordinances related to land development, utility permitting, ; ability to operate personal computers; ability to understand and prepare technical engineering reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, public and private agency officials and the general public.


Education and Experience

Associates/Technical degree with coursework in engineering technology, or a related field; Moderate experience in computer aided drafting; Construction experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting, speaking or hearing and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).


Special Requirements

Obtain State Soil and Water Conservation Commission Leve IB Certified Inspector and Level II Certified Plan Reviewer certifications within six months.

Possession of AutoCAD certification or proficiency in CAD upon hire.

Favorable background history as determined by review of local, State and Federal records.

Valid driver's license in the State of Georgia with favorable driving history (MVR).
