Job description

The New York Times Opinion department is seeking a sophisticated editorial leader to spearhead our coverage of one of the most consequential shifts of our time: the rise of artificial intelligence. This role is designed for an editor with a deep background in intellectual history, policy and narrative journalism - someone capable of moving beyond the daily news cycle to deliver definitive enterprise work that explains how AI is reshaping society, labor and the human experience.

The ideal candidate will combine the intellectual rigor of a long-form editor with the tactical agility required to edit and manage high-profile columnists and drive a department-wide coverage strategy.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and coordinate Opinion's cross-platform strategy for AI coverage, identifying the most urgent moral, political and economic questions raised by emerging technologies
  • Commission and edit ambitious enterprise projects, deep-dive features and essays that provide historical context and forward-looking analysis of the AI revolution
  • Collaborate with graphics, multimedia and audience teams to create innovative digital presentations for complex technical and philosophical topics
  • Manage and edit a portfolio of New York Times columnists and contributing writers, providing high-touch guidance on narrative voice, structural clarity and argumentative rigor
  • Identify and recruit guest essayists and new recurring voices who can contribute specialized expertise on technology, ethics and the future
  • Manage a team of writers to refine their perspectives, ensuring that every piece of commentary meets the highest standards of intellectual honesty and literary excellence
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • You will report to the Opinion Editorial Director.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in senior editorial roles at a major national publication
  • A proven track record of editing complex, ideas-driven journalism and high-profile writers
  • Exceptional ability to synthesize technical information into compelling, accessible narratives for a general audience
  • A deep interest in the intersection of technology and public policy, with an established network of thinkers and practitioners in the AI space
  • Experience managing large-scale editorial projects from conception through publication
  • Sophisticated understanding of the digital media landscape and a commitment to maintaining The Times's standards of editorial excellence

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience collaborating with data journalists and visual editors to build interactive or data-driven explainers that make abstract AI concepts tangible for a general audience
  • A track record of developing the next generation of editors and writers, fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and rigorous fact-checking
