What is a commercial AV installer?

Commercial AV Installers are professionals who set up, configure, and maintain audiovisual (AV) equipment in commercial settings such as offices, schools, conference centers, and retail spaces. Their work includes installing projectors, sound systems, video walls, digital signage, and related control systems to ensure seamless audio and visual experiences. They also troubleshoot technical issues, run cables, and work closely with clients to tailor solutions to specific needs. In addition to installation, they may provide ongoing maintenance and training for end users. Commercial AV Installers must have strong technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of current AV technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a commercial AV installer?

A Commercial AV Installer needs a solid understanding of audio-visual systems, wiring, and installation techniques, typically backed by a high school diploma or relevant technical training. Familiarity with tools such as multimeters, cable testers, and AV control systems, as well as certifications like CTS (Certified Technology Specialist), are often required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help installers work efficiently on-site and with clients. Mastering these skills ensures safe, reliable AV system installations that meet client specifications and industry standards.

  • Hands-on mechanical, construction, carpentry, automotive, low-voltage, or technical installation experience.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think ahead on a job site.
  • Interest in audio, music, sound systems, or AV technology.
  • Ability to measure, drill, level, mount, assemble, and troubleshoot.
  • Willingness to travel overnight up to 40% of the time.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly.

  • Reliable, safety-minded, and comfortable working as part of a field crew.

Preferred Experience
