What is a commercial AV installer?

Commercial AV Installers are professionals who set up, configure, and maintain audiovisual (AV) equipment in commercial settings such as offices, schools, conference centers, and retail spaces. Their work includes installing projectors, sound systems, video walls, digital signage, and related control systems to ensure seamless audio and visual experiences. They also troubleshoot technical issues, run cables, and work closely with clients to tailor solutions to specific needs. In addition to installation, they may provide ongoing maintenance and training for end users. Commercial AV Installers must have strong technical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of current AV technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a commercial AV installer?

A Commercial AV Installer needs a solid understanding of audio-visual systems, wiring, and installation techniques, typically backed by a high school diploma or relevant technical training. Familiarity with tools such as multimeters, cable testers, and AV control systems, as well as certifications like CTS (Certified Technology Specialist), are often required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help installers work efficiently on-site and with clients. Mastering these skills ensures safe, reliable AV system installations that meet client specifications and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by commercial AV installers during large-scale installation projects?

Commercial AV Installers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple contractors, adapting to last-minute changes in project specifications, and troubleshooting unexpected technical issues on-site. Working in active commercial environments can require flexibility in scheduling and strict adherence to safety protocols. Effective communication with project managers, electricians, and IT professionals is essential to ensure installations meet client expectations and industry standards.

Job description

Company Description

Tri-Tronics AV is a family-owned and veteran-owned audio visual integration company based in Lillington, NC. We've been serving customers for more than 60 years, and while the technology has changed quite a bit over that time, we've remained a hands-on company focused on doing good work and taking care of our customers.

Our team designs, installs, programs, and services AV systems for universities, government and military facilities, corporations, houses of worship, athletic venues, and other organizations throughout the region. We're a relatively small team, so people here have the opportunity to be involved in different parts of a project, work closely with one another, and see the systems we build come together from beginning to end.

We take pride in the quality of our work, the relationships we've built with our customers, and creating a workplace where people can continue learning and growing in the AV industry.

Role Description

The AV Estimator/Designer is a full-time hybrid role based in Lillington, NC, with some work-from-home flexibility. This position is responsible for interfacing with account managers, reviewing project requirements, developing AV system designs, and preparing accurate estimates and proposals for commercial and institutional clients. Day-to-day tasks include selecting appropriate equipment, coordinating with sales and project management teams, creating system schematics and layouts, and ensuring designs meet budget, performance, and industry standards. The role also involves site visits for field verification, collaborating with installation and service teams, and updating documentation throughout the project lifecycle. The AV Estimator/Designer will maintain up-to-date knowledge of AV technologies and best practices to support high-quality, reliable solutions.

Qualifications

  • Experience with AV system design, including needs assessment, equipment selection, and creation of system drawings and documentation.
  • Proficiency in estimating and proposal development, including cost analysis, bill of materials creation, and scope of work definition.
  • Knowledge of audio, video, control, and networking relevant to commercial AV environments.
  • Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings and coordinate designs with other trades.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with clients, sales, project managers, and installation teams.
  • Solid organizational and time-management abilities, with attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
  • Comfort with hybrid work, including occasional on-site visits around NC, our office in Lillington, NC, and remote tasks such as design and proposal development.
  • CTS-D certification preferred
  • Proficiency with common office and design tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, PDF editors, Bluebeam, CAD or AV design software experience is a plus).
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally to client sites and project locations as needed.
