How much do cold welder jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 3, 2026, the average hourly pay for cold welder in the United States is $22.26, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.75 and $24.76 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Cold Welder vs Arc Welder?

AspectCold WelderArc Welder
CredentialsTypically requires specialized training or certification in cold welding techniquesRequires AWS certification or equivalent
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, often involving repair or fabrication of metal parts without heatConstruction sites, manufacturing, repair shops involving welding with heat
Industry UsageManufacturing, repair, and maintenance industriesConstruction, shipbuilding, manufacturing industries

Cold welders and arc welders both work with metal fabrication, but cold welders focus on bonding metals without heat, often requiring specialized training. Arc welders use electrical arcs to melt and fuse metals, typically needing certification. While their work environments and industry applications overlap, their techniques and credentials differ significantly.

Are cold welders any good?

Cold welders are skilled tradespeople who use specialized equipment to join metals without heat, often in maintenance and repair roles. Their effectiveness depends on proper training, certification, and the specific application, making them valuable in industries like manufacturing and construction.

Do welders make $100 an hour?

Cold welders, like other specialized welders, typically do not earn $100 an hour. Most earn between $20 and $50 per hour, with higher wages possible for experienced or highly skilled welders working in demanding environments or on complex projects. Earning $100 an hour is uncommon and usually requires extensive experience, certifications, or working in high-paying industries such as oil and gas or aerospace.

What are some common challenges faced by Cold Welders in their daily work, and how can they be addressed?

Cold Welders often encounter challenges such as ensuring precise surface preparation and alignment, as even minor contaminants or misalignments can compromise the weld quality. Working with dissimilar metals or in environments with strict cleanliness standards can also add complexity. To address these challenges, it's important to follow rigorous cleaning protocols, double-check alignment, and communicate closely with team members, such as quality inspectors and engineers, to ensure every step meets specification. Ongoing training and attention to detail are key to consistently achieving strong, reliable welds.

Can you make $300,000 as a welder?

Cold welders can potentially earn $300,000 annually, especially with extensive experience, specialized skills, and working in high-demand industries like oil and gas or aerospace. Achieving this income level often requires working overtime, obtaining certifications, and working in remote or hazardous environments. Such high earnings are uncommon for entry-level positions and typically reflect seniority and expertise.

What welding jobs pay $50 an hour?

Cold welders and other specialized welding roles can earn $50 an hour or more, especially with experience, certifications, and in high-demand industries like manufacturing, construction, or repair services. Advanced skills in TIG or MIG welding and working in remote or industrial environments often contribute to higher pay rates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cold Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cold Welder, you need a strong understanding of metallurgy, precise manual dexterity, and experience in mechanical joining processes, typically supported by a technical diploma or relevant vocational training. Familiarity with specialized welding equipment, surface preparation tools, and non-destructive testing methods is often required, along with certifications like AWS or equivalent in welding technology. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for ensuring high-quality, defect-free joints. These skills and qualities are essential because Cold Welding demands precision and reliability in industries where safety and structural integrity are paramount.

What is a cold welder?

A cold welder is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in the process of cold welding, a technique where two clean metal surfaces are joined together without the use of heat or melting. This method relies on high pressure to bond materials at the atomic level, typically used for metals like aluminum, copper, or certain alloys. Cold welders work in industries such as aerospace, electronics, and manufacturing where joining dissimilar metals or creating high-integrity bonds is essential. Their responsibilities may include preparing surfaces, operating specialized cold welding equipment, and inspecting welds for quality assurance.
