About the Position
The Production Operator is responsible for supporting the safe and efficient production of steel by operating, monitoring, and maintaining equipment within the department. This hands-on role follows established procedures and safety standards, performs basic troubleshooting and preventative maintenance, and collaborates with team members to meet production goals. The position requires flexibility to work rotating 12-hour shifts in an industrial environment.
Main Responsibilities
  • Know and follow all safety rules and evacuation routes in the area
  • Learn and follow the standard operating procedures and safe operating practices (JSA/SOP) within the department
  • Develop and use sound operating skills through the departmental skills progression
  • Work in an operational, hands-on capacity
  • Operate and maintain the equipment for daily operations in the department
  • Cross train and learn all functions of the department and become proficient in each
  • React effectively to unplanned events and deal with conflicting demands
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment
  • Verify, document and enter data
  • Act as a team member

Education, Experience, and Competencies
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent GED or HSE
  • Basic mechanical skills and aptitude
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office suite
  • Good interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Conscientious with a good attendance record
  • Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision

Preferred:
  • Minimum of 3 years industrial experience
  • Experience in heavy industry, construction or similar field
  • Prior experience operating cab crane, forklift, hand torches
  • Associates degree or certificate in mechanical or electrical field

Position Type - Work Hours - Travel Requirements
  • Position is full time, hourly, and is eligible for overtime
  • Positon works rotating 12-hour swing shifts to include days and nights
  • No travel is expected for this position

Working Conditions
The position requires the following vision and hearing capabilities:
  • Talking person to person, on the phone, and/or in group settings.
  • Hearing in person, on the phone, and/or in group settings.
  • Vision at near, mid, and far range.
  • Peripheral vision and depth perception.

The employee will frequently be required to:
  • Stand, walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Twist at waist level, reach above shoulder level, reach at and/or below waist level.
  • Use both hands for grasping, fingering, gripping and feeling textures and temperatures.
  • Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.

The employee will occasionally be required to:
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

The employee will work in the following conditions:
  • Extreme hot and cold conditions.
  • Wet and humid conditions.
  • Amid fumes, dust, dirt, and smoke.
  • In confined areas and heights/high places.
  • Near moving parts of heavy machinery, equipment in motion and high voltage equipment.
  • Amid noise.
  • Amid mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards and industrial magnets.
  • While wearing safety equipment and/or clothing for protection from hazards.
