This role ensures accurate, compliant, and timely coding practices that support revenue cycle performance, regulatory adherence, and organizational objectives.The Coding Manager is accountable for coding productivity, quality, backlog management, reporting infrastructure, and workflow optimization. This position partners closely with Revenue Cycle, Compliance, Quality, Clinical, and Information Technology teams to drive performance improvement and ensure data integrity across the organization.Key ResponsibilitiesOperational Leadership & OwnershipAssumes full ownership of coding operations, including productivity, quality, backlog management, workflow execution, and reporting structure.Direct and manage daily coding operations across inpatient (HB) and outpatient/professional fee (PB) services.Establish and manage distinct workflows, productivity standards, and performance monitoring processes for HB and PB coding.Develop, implement, and maintain structured operational processes to ensure consistency, scalability, and accountability.Lead staffing activities, including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, coaching, performance management, and corrective action.Mentor senior coding staff and develop succession planning strategies.Productivity, Reporting & Data ManagementDevelop, implement, and maintain standardized dashboards and reporting cadence (daily, weekly, monthly).Monitor coder-level productivity, quality, and performance trends; provide variance analysis and actionable insights.Establish structured methodology for tracking:Completed vs. in-progress workHB vs. PB workloadsBacklog and throughput metricsReduce reliance on manual tracking processes by leveraging Epic and reporting tools.Utilize data-driven decision-making to support staffing, performance improvement, and operational planning.Coding Quality, Compliance & AuditingOversee internal and external coding audits; analyze findings and implement corrective action plans.Ensure all coded data is supported by appropriate provider documentation and meets regulatory and payer requirements.Monitor compliance with CMS, OIG, HIPAA, and other regulatory guidelines.Identify risk areas and implement mitigation strategies in collaboration with Compliance and Quality teams.Promote adherence to established coding guidelines, policies, and organizational standards.Backlog & Throughput ManagementDevelop and execute strategies to reduce coding backlog and improve throughput.Monitor uncoded accounts, turnaround times, and productivity trends.Align coding performance with organizational goals related to timeliness and financial performance.Revenue Cycle & Financial PerformanceParticipate in Revenue Cycle strategy initiatives to improve financial performance, case mix index (CMI), and reimbursement accuracy.Partner with Patient Financial Services and Revenue Integrity to address denials, edits, and reimbursement opportunities.Ensure coding processes support accurate and timely billing and minimize rework.Technology & System OptimizationDemonstrate advanced proficiency in Epic coding workflows, reporting tools, and work queues.Lead optimization of Epic-based reporting and reduce reliance on external or manual tracking solutions.Direct implementation and integration of AI-assisted coding tools and emerging technologies.Ensure timely implementation of annual code updates and system configuration changes.Education & Provider EngagementDesign and deliver structured education programs for coding staff, providers, and clinical teams.Serve as a subject matter expert for coding and documentation-related inquiries.Partner with CDI, Quality, and Provider leadership to improve documentation accuracy and capture of clinical complexity.Interdisciplinary CollaborationServe as a liaison between HIM, Patient Financial Services, clinical departments, and program leadership.Represent HIM in interdisciplinary committees, regulatory readiness activities, and organizational initiatives.Contribute to system-wide process improvement efforts aligned with organizational goals.Compliance, Safety & Organizational StandardsPromote a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability aligned with Shepherd Center values.Maintain an open-door environment and uphold non-retaliation practices for reporting concerns.Ensure compliance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and safety standards.Follow established protocols for incident reporting and workplace safety.Other DutiesPerform other duties as assigned.Required Minimum EducationTwo- or four-year degree from an accredited Health Information Technology or Management program or from an accredited healthcare-related course of study.<>·Required Minimum CertificationAHIMA or AAPC credential required (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPC).Required Minimum ExperienceMinimum 5 years of progressive experience in hospital-based coding operations.Minimum 3 years of leadership or management experience.Demonstrated experience managing coding operations in an Epic environment required.Required Minimum Skills & CompetenciesAdvanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, DRG/APC reimbursement methodologies.Advanced Epic proficiency, including coding workflows, reporting tools, and work queue management.Demonstrated ability to develop and implement productivity and quality management systems.Strong analytical skills with ability to translate data into actionable insights.Experience with coding audits, compliance programs, and regulatory requirements.Ability to independently lead operational processes and drive results.Strong leadership, communication, and team development skills.Ability to manage cross-functional initiatives and influence organizational outcomes.Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.Ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic healthcare environment.Commitment to ongoing learning and competency development.Physical DemandsSedentary work involving primarily sitting, with occasional standing or walking.
