Position: Inpatient Coding Specialist
Location: Las Vegas, NV 89102
Job Type: Full-Time
Salary: $28.24 – $43.78 per hour

We are seeking an experienced Inpatient Coding Specialist to perform expert inpatient coding of medical records. This position plays an important role in ensuring accurate clinical data, reimbursement, utilization review, quality reporting, research, and regulatory compliance.

The successful candidate will review and abstract medical record information, assign accurate inpatient codes and MS-DRGs, identify coding opportunities, monitor trends, and report discrepancies or recommendations for improvement to management.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform accurate and timely inpatient coding for acute-care medical records.
  • Review and abstract clinical information from patient medical records.
  • Assign ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS and other applicable codes.
  • Apply Medicare hospital and IPPS reimbursement regulations and MS-DRG classification requirements.
  • Identify and report coding opportunities and recommend process improvements.
  • Monitor coding trends, discrepancies, and quality indicators and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Review documentation for completeness, accuracy, and coding compliance.
  • Run and respond to appropriate clinical documentation queries.
  • Review denials and assist with denial-related coding issues.
  • Maintain departmental quality and productivity standards.
  • Utilize 3M 360 or similar computer-assisted coding/encoder systems.
  • Protect confidential patient and organizational information in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Prepare reports and communicate coding-related findings to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain current knowledge of coding guidelines, reimbursement regulations, technology, and EHR practices.


Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of experience performing inpatient coding in an acute-care setting.


Required Certification

Candidates must hold one or more of the following:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)


Knowledge & Skills

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of:

  • ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS and other applicable coding systems.
  • Medicare hospital and IPPS coding and reimbursement regulations.
  • MS-DRG classification.
  • Inpatient coding guidelines and compliance requirements.
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR) and healthcare technology.
  • Revenue cycle workflows, including chargemaster, code edits, auditing, denials management, and documentation improvement.
  • Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, and surgical procedures.
  • Patient rights, confidentiality, infection control, safety practices, and applicable healthcare regulations.


Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to meet established coding productivity and quality standards.
  • Excellent medical record review and abstraction skills.
  • Ability to identify inconsistencies and discrepancies.
