Description
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking to hire three (3) motivate student assistants to assist with the development, maintenance, and enhancement of internal applications. This role is ideal for a student who is building foundational programming skills and is eager to gain hands-on experience working in a real-world development environment. You will work alongside experienced developers, contribute to active projects, and learn modern software engineering practices.
This position will report to 1010 Riverside Pkwy, West Sacramento, CA 95605.

Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.
UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant position should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.
UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California throughout the course of employment.
Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.
Majors/Fields of Study
Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Web Development, Data Science, or Data Analytics.
Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Compensation
$21.49 - $33.52 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to read and follow coding standards and existing patterns in a codebase.
  • Comfortable asking questions and sharing progress/issues in a team environment.
  • Basic debugging and troubleshooting (console logs, breakpoints, reading error messages).
  • Basic understanding of C# and .NET Core or Blazor project structure.
  • Basic SQL skills (CRUD operations, simple joins, understanding of relational databases).
  • Exposure to Azure DevOps or other version control (repos, branches, pull requests).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority. Please note that prior to appointment, individuals claiming preference under one of these categories will be required to furnish documentation establishing their eligibility.
  • Familiarity with intermediate C# concepts such as LINQ, async/await, and dependency injection.
  • Experience working with .NET Core, Blazor, or similar modern web frameworks.
  • Ability to debug using developer tools such as browser dev tools, Visual Studio breakpoints, or logging frameworks.
  • Experience building or consuming basic REST APIs.
  • Understanding of common software design principles (MVC, components, separation of concerns).
  • Experience using Git beyond the basics, including resolving merge conflicts and reviewing pull requests.
  • Exposure to Azure services such as App Service, Azure Functions, Blob Storage, or Azure SQL.
  • Ability to write more complex SQL queries, including multi-table joins and filtering.
  • Familiarity with Agile development practices (standups, sprints, task boards).
  • Experience working on academic or personal coding projects using version control.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially for documenting work.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Build or modify simple SQL queries, tables or stored procedures under guidance.
  • Help test and debug application features, document issues and fixes.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining web application features using .NET Core or Blazor.
  • Use Azure DevOps for source control and participating in pull requests.
  • Provide general support to the development team and learn tools/technologies assigned.
  • Update documentation or READMEs as needed.
