Job description

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The essential function of the position within the organization is to perform Mechanical and Energy Management Controls (EMS) in support of the proper maintenance of District properties. The position is responsible for performing manual labor, maintaining equipment and tools, completing work orders in a timely manner with minimal service disruption, and maintaining accurate work records. The position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.


This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the primary job elements.

  1. Provides oral and written reports to the Zone Maintenance Manager as required.
  2. Coordinates and recommends to the Zone Maintenance Manager all necessary overtime work (bonafied emergencies excluded).
  3. Assists the Zone Maintenance Manager in reviewing all outside contract request for repairs.
  4. Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Zone Maintenance Manager for work to be done in-house or contracted.
  5. Responsible for the safe and efficient repair and maintenance of the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration within the Shelby County Schools.
  6. Keeps records of work requested, work completed, hours and materials used and other necessary management information.
  7. Utilizes the work order system to monitor the use and cost of materials and supplies to ensure that the budget is not exceeded.
  8. Maintains an inventory of tools and equipment to ensure accountability and efficiency in the use of city property.
  9. Responsible for the enforcement of safety regulations and precautions in his area of responsibility.
  10. Communicates daily with the Zone Maintenance Manager concerning work progress and problems encountered.
  11. Oversees the Energy Management department.
  12. Coordinates and monitors all requested outside contractor assistance in repair of equipment.
  13. Coordinates with zone managers to ensure that all heating and air conditioning systems have been inspected and tested prior to summer/winter operation.
  14. Coordinates with zone managers in performing preventive maintenance on air conditioning and heating equipment.
  15. Ensures HVAC personnel are in compliance with EPA CFC requirements.
  16. Follow-up repairs by both in-house and outside contract to ensure properly completed.
  17. Performs hands on assistance in training HVAC personnel.
  18. Applies for necessary permits and communicates with code enforcement officials.
  19. Attends training and meetings as required to exchange information and to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  20. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Requires High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience. Requires a Journeyman Licenses in Mechanical, and Gas.

(PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED).

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor’s Degrees must be included.
