Co Op Project Manager information

What is a co op project manager?

A Co Op Project Manager oversees and coordinates projects within a cooperative (co-op) setting, ensuring they meet deadlines, budgets, and quality standards. They collaborate with stakeholders, manage resources, and address challenges throughout the project lifecycle. This role requires strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills to align projects with the co-op’s goals. Depending on the industry, responsibilities may vary but generally involve project planning, execution, and performance tracking.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a co op project manager?

To thrive as a Co Op Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, a background in engineering or construction management, and experience overseeing cooperative (co-op) housing or utility projects. Familiarity with project management software like MS Project or Primavera, as well as relevant certifications such as PMP or CAPM, is often advantageous. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and stakeholder communication skills help you excel in coordinating diverse teams and balancing competing priorities. These qualities ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of all partners and stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by co op project managers, and how are they addressed?

Co Op Project Managers often deal with balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders, such as residents, contractors, and board members, which can sometimes lead to conflicting priorities or expectations. Managing project timelines amid unforeseen delays and resource constraints is another typical challenge. Successful managers address these hurdles by maintaining open lines of communication, proactively identifying and managing risks, and employing effective negotiation and conflict resolution strategies. Building strong relationships and fostering collaboration across teams are key to keeping projects on track and ensuring the successful completion of co-op initiatives.

Job description

Build Your Legacy. Shape the Future.

At LAURIN, we don’t just build structures — we build careers and communities. Since 1985, we’ve earned a reputation for excellence in construction and project management by delivering projects that matter and supporting the people who make them happen.

We’re seeking a Construction Co-op Student who is eager to turn classroom learning into meaningful project experience. This opportunity is ideal for a motivated student who wants broad exposure to field operations, project coordination, quality, safety, scheduling, and construction documentation while learning from an experienced project team.

Why Join LAURIN?

A co-op term at LAURIN is more than a line on your résumé — it’s an opportunity to learn how complex construction projects come together, contribute meaningful work, and build relationships with experienced industry professionals.

  • Competitive hourly compensation that recognizes your academic progress and relevant experience.
  • Meaningful, hands-on experience supporting active construction projects.
  • Practical exposure to field operations, project coordination, quality, safety, scheduling, and document control.
  • Guidance and mentorship from experienced project management and site professionals.
  • Opportunities to apply classroom learning to real construction challenges and deliverables.
  • Regular feedback and support to help you develop technical skills, professional judgment, and confidence.
  • Inclusive, safety-first culture where questions, learning, and new perspectives are welcomed.
  • Opportunity to build your professional network and be considered for future co-op or full-time roles.

Your Impact at LAURIN

As a Construction Co-op Student, you will work alongside our project management and site teams to support the day-to-day coordination of active construction projects. You’ll gain practical experience with field documentation, trade coordination, quantity tracking, inspections, scheduling, and safety while contributing to work that directly supports successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Superintendent with workforce planning and coordination of upcoming site activities.
  • Document field records related to quality, production, labour, materials, and daily project activities.
  • Maintain project document-control systems and follow established procedures for accurate, current records.
  • Support the project team in coordinating trade contractors, including requests for information (RFIs), shop drawings, changes, and billings.
  • Assist with the supervision of self-perform scopes, including labour, production, and quantity tracking.
  • Prepare quantity takeoffs from drawings and specifications to support planning, procurement, and project controls.
  • Assist with updating drawings, specifications, site documentation, and record information as work progresses.
  • Identify and communicate potential issues observed on site or within defined work scopes, and assist the project team with follow-up.
  • Coordinate third-party inspections and site reviews under the direction of the project team.
  • Participate in basic safety inspections and training, promptly report hazards, and model safe work practices and procedures.
  • Assist with schedule updates, short-term planning, and monitoring progress against project milestones.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with project team members, trade partners, consultants, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Take initiative in learning company systems, construction processes, and project-delivery practices throughout the work term.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a diploma or degree program in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Eligible to complete a formal co-op or internship work term through a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Basic ability to read construction drawings and specifications; previous construction, site, or project experience is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to maintain accurate records and follow established processes.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and a professional, collaborative approach when working with diverse project stakeholders.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook; exposure to construction-management, drawing, or scheduling software is an asset.
  • Curious, dependable, and proactive, with a willingness to ask questions, accept feedback, and take ownership of assigned work.
  • Comfort working in an active construction environment and a demonstrated commitment to quality and safe work practices.
  • Ability to travel to and work from an assigned project site; a valid driver’s licence and access to reliable transportation may be required depending on the placement.

Education & Professional Credentials

  • Active enrolment in a Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or comparable post-secondary program is required.
  • Relevant academic projects, student leadership, safety training, or prior co-op, site, or construction experience will be considered assets.

Eligibility & Security Requirements

At LAURIN, many of our projects require specific employment and security conditions. To be considered, candidates must:

  • Be legally authorized to work in Canada. Please note that LAURIN does not provide or assume sponsorship for work permits or visas.
  • Be eligible to obtain and maintain Government of Canada Reliability Status security clearance (Secret clearance is considered an asset).
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide proof of authorization to work in Canada (e.g., valid work permit or Social Insurance Number). All offers of employment are conditional upon obtaining the required security clearance.

Estimated Compensation

The hourly wage for this co-op opportunity is $23.00.

Life at LAURIN

At LAURIN, you’ll be part of something bigger than a job — you’ll be part of a team recognized for its integrity, teamwork, and long-term careers. We invest in people at every stage, from co-ops and entry roles to leadership development programs that help you pursue your career goals.

We are an inclusive employer, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds. If you require accommodation during the application process, please contact position@laurin.ca and include the position and location you’re applying for.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in Canada.  This role is not eligible for sponsorship, and we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa or work permit.

This posting is for a temporary co-op student opportunity within our organization. This recruitment process does not involve the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to screen, assess, or select applicants. All hiring decisions are made by qualified reviewers.
