What is a co chief executive officer?

Co Chief Executive Officers (Co-CEOs) are two individuals who share the top executive position within a company. They jointly oversee the organization's strategic direction, decision-making, and daily management. This leadership structure is intended to leverage the strengths and expertise of both leaders, often dividing responsibilities based on their skills or company divisions. While this approach can foster collaboration and innovation, it also requires clear communication and defined roles to avoid conflicts or confusion.

How do co chief executive officers typically divide responsibilities and maintain effective collaboration?

In organizations with Co-Chief Executive Officers (Co-CEOs), responsibilities are usually divided based on each leader's strengths and expertise, such as one focusing on operations while the other oversees strategy or external relations. Regular communication, clear delineation of decision-making areas, and shared vision are essential for effective collaboration. Co-CEOs often hold joint meetings, align on priorities, and establish agreed-upon processes to resolve disagreements, ensuring unified leadership for the company. Successful candidates should be comfortable with high-level collaboration, transparency, and adaptability to thrive in this unique leadership structure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a co chief executive officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Co Chief Executive Officer, you need extensive leadership experience, strategic vision, and a proven track record in business operations, often supported by an advanced degree such as an MBA. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, financial management software, and board governance frameworks is typically required. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and decision-making skills set outstanding Co CEOs apart, especially when sharing leadership responsibilities. These competencies are critical for driving organizational growth, aligning executive teams, and ensuring the company’s long-term success.

Job description

Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

We are seeking a mission-driven and hands-on Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead a rural community hospital dedicated to delivering high-quality, accessible care. This is a unique opportunity for a leader who is passionate about making a meaningful impact in an underserved community while driving operational excellence and sustainable growth.

The CEO is responsible for the overall day-to-day operations of the hospital, while providing strategic leadership to ensure long-term viability in a rural healthcare environment. This role oversees all patient care, clinical, and support services, with a strong focus on access to care, community engagement, and financial stewardship.

As a visible and engaged leader in the community, the CEO will build strong relationships with physicians, staff, board members, and local stakeholders. You will play a key role in strengthening service lines, expanding access, and navigating the unique challenges of rural healthcare—including workforce shortages, reimbursement pressures, and evolving patient needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead day-to-day hospital operations with a hands-on, collaborative leadership style
  • Champion access to high-quality, patient-centered care for the local community
  • Develop and execute strategies to ensure financial stability and long-term sustainability
  • Strengthen community relationships and serve as a trusted ambassador for the hospital
  • Recruit, develop, and retain clinical and administrative talent in a competitive rural market
  • Identify opportunities to expand services, partnerships, and care delivery models
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, legal, and accreditation standards
  • Partner with the board and leadership team to align strategy with community needs and organizational goals

Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field
  • Progressive healthcare leadership experience, ideally within a rural or critical access hospital setting
  • Demonstrated success managing operations in resource-constrained environments
  • Strong financial acumen with experience improving margins and optimizing performance
  • Proven ability to engage communities and build strong stakeholder relationships

Benefits
  • Competitive executive compensation package
  • Comprehensive health insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Relocation assistance (if applicable)
  • Opportunity to make a lasting impact in a close-knit community and lead with autonomy
