FULL DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a Machine Shop Manager to oversee daily machine shop operations within a precision manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective production of high-quality components while managing shop personnel, workflow, in-process quality control, equipment maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on CNC machining and programming experience, mechanical machine shop expertise, and the leadership ability to mentor, develop, and support shop personnel in a tight-knit manufacturing environment.


The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Directing and overseeing daily machine shop operations to ensure safety, quality, productivity, and on-time delivery
  • Supervising, training, mentoring, and evaluating machinists, CNC operators, programmers, and other shop personnel
  • Managing and mentoring the existing shop supervisor and production team members
  • Planning, prioritizing, and coordinating workflow, labor, and resources to meet production schedules and customer requirements
  • Coordinating capacity planning, scheduling, and shop floor priorities
  • Monitoring production performance and implementing corrective actions to improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and optimize throughput
  • Ensuring proper tooling, materials, and supplies are available to support production requirements
  • Supporting hands-on CNC programming and machining needs as required
  • Interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, and manufacturing specifications
  • Developing efficient machining strategies based on technical requirements
  • Selecting tooling, establishing cutting parameters, and optimizing cycle times while maintaining quality standards
  • Managing preventive maintenance programs and coordinating equipment repairs to maximize machine uptime and reliability
  • Collaborating with engineering, quality, facilities, and operations teams to meet customer requirements and delivery schedules
  • Monitoring productivity, performance metrics, quality, and shop output
  • Supporting in-process quality control and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Developing, maintaining, and providing formalized instruction for employee training programs
  • Fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, safety, mentorship, and continuous improvement throughout the machine shop
  • Supporting growth of the shop management structure and technical development of the team
  • Performing other duties as assigned to support shop operations and business needs


The selected candidate will also possess:

  • 10+ years of CNC machinist experience required
  • Hands-on CNC programming experience required
  • Mechanical machine shop background required
  • Supervisory, shop floor lead, or machine shop leadership experience required
  • Experience managing, mentoring, or developing machinists, CNC operators, programmers, or shop personnel
  • Experience with CAM software such as Mastercam, Fusion 360, GibbsCAM, Esprit, or similar programming platforms
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, and manufacturing specifications
  • Experience with mills, lathes, CNC mills, CNC lathes, hand tools, and related shop equipment
  • Experience with ERP software preferred
  • Strong production management, workflow coordination, and resource management skills
  • Strong quality control, safety management, and technical problem-solving skills
  • Ability to select tooling, establish cutting parameters, and optimize cycle times
  • Ability to monitor performance, identify issues, evaluate solutions, and make sound decisions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong time management, prioritization, organization, and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to lead, mentor, train, and motivate shop personnel
  • Ability to work onsite in a hands-on machine shop environment
  • Ability to work a self-directed schedule supporting shop shifts and production needs


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to regularly stand, walk, and sit throughout the workday
  • Ability to frequently use hands to finger, handle, feel, reach, and operate tools, equipment, computers, and machinery
  • Ability to communicate verbally and hear in a loud shop environment
  • Ability to occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl
  • Ability to occasionally lift, push, pull, or move up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to use close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and adjust focus as needed
  • Ability to work around moving mechanical parts and shop equipment
  • Ability to work in an environment with occasional exposure to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, electrical shock risk, and vibration
  • Ability to work in a shop environment where noise levels are usually loud
  • Ability to wear required safety glasses and follow all required safety procedures in restricted shop areas
